Founded in 1956, the school is one of the first ten special schools of architecture in New China. In 1960, with the approval of the State Council, the university was named Jilin Institute of Architecture and Engineering and began to hold undergraduate education. In 1997, it passed the qualification evaluation of undergraduate teaching by the former National Education Commission. In 2003, the university became an authorized unit for master's degree. In 2008, she received the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level from the Ministry of Education and achieved "excellent" results. In 2010, the school moved from the old campus in Hongqi Street to the new campus in Jingyue. It was renamed Jilin Jianzhu University in 2013.
