Zhengzhou Railway Vocational & Technical University is a public undergraduate-level vocational institution in Henan Province. Its predecessor, Zhengzhou Railway Vocational & Technical College, was founded in 1951. It offered undergraduate education from 1958 to 1963 and became one of the first batch of institutions to launch higher vocational education in China in 1994. Approved by the Ministry of Education in 1999 as a full-time institution of higher education, it is the only public rail transit vocational college in Henan Province and the first independently established higher vocational and technical college under the national railway system. It is a National Backbone Higher Vocational College, a National High-quality Higher Vocational College, and a construction institution under the National "Double-High Plan". In May 2026, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Zhengzhou Railway Vocational & Technical University on the basis of Zhengzhou Railway Vocational & Technical College.

Located in Zhengzhou, the political, economic and cultural center of Henan Province and an important national railway transportation hub, the university’s new campus lies in Zhengdong New District, a region with superior geographical location and broad development prospects. The university now has 16 teaching schools (departments) and 5 academies. It offers 60 programs covering nine disciplines: transportation, medicine and health, electronic information, finance and commerce, civil engineering, equipment manufacturing, culture and art, tourism, and food and pharmaceuticals. It has formed a program layout targeting three major industries: rail transit, medicine and health, and electronic information. The university recruits students nationwide with more than 17,000 full-time students and over 1,000 full-time teachers. Its practices in building a teaching team of double-qualified teachers have been selected as a national typical case. The university boasts 6 national-level teaching teams including one of the first National Huang Danian-style Teacher Teams (only 10 higher vocational colleges nationwide were selected) and national vocational education teacher teaching innovation teams. It also has 9 provincial-level teaching teams, 3 provincial-level master studios for double-qualified teachers, and 2 provincial-level inheritance and innovation platforms for teachers’ craftsmanship and technical skills. The faculty includes 1 expert enjoying the Special Government Allowance from the State Council, 2 National Outstanding Teachers, 2 National Technical Experts, 3 Provincial Vocational Education Experts, 3 Central Plains Teaching Talents under the Central Plains Talents Program, 4 Provincial Distinguished Teachers, 12 Provincial Ethical Teachers, 12 Provincial Distinguished Teacher Candidates, 21 Provincial Backbone Teachers, 1 Provincial Academic and Technical Leader, 1 winner of the May 1st Labor Medal, 1 Provincial Outstanding Teacher, 1 Provincial Model Teacher, and 28 Academic and Technical Leaders recognized by the Henan Provincial Department of Education.

Adhering to the innovation-driven development strategy, the university deepens collaborative cooperation with key enterprises, renowned universities and research institutes. It hosts the higher vocational branch of BeSTDR Infrastructure Hospital — the first of its kind nationwide. It owns 12 provincial and above scientific research platforms, including the Collaborative Innovation Center for High-speed Rail Drivers’ Health and Safety Research, Henan Engineering Research Center for High-speed Railway Operation and Maintenance, Henan Engineering Technology Research Center for Intelligent Safety of Rail Transit, Henan Engineering Research Center for Smart Education, Henan Engineering Research Center for Natural Drug Extraction and Medical Technology Application, Henan Engineering Technology Research Center for Smart Education and Intelligent Technology Application, Henan Engineering Technology Research Center for Railway Food Safety Management, Henan Engineering Technology Research Center for Human-Machine Intelligent Interaction in Safety-Critical Systems, Henan Engineering Research Center for Rail Transit Non-destructive Testing Technology and Equipment, the University-Enterprise R&D Center for Intelligent Railway Track Maintenance Technology jointly built by Zhengzhou Railway Vocational & Technical University and Zhengzhou Bridge Section of China Railway Zhengzhou Group Co., Ltd., Henan Engineering Technology Research Center for Intelligent Manufacturing of Rail Transit Equipment, and Henan Engineering Research Center for Operation Safety and Transport Efficiency Technology & Application of Rail Transit. These platforms provide solid support for boosting the university’s scientific and technological innovation capacity and comprehensive school-running strength.

Striving for development through science and technology, the university builds platforms and cultivates teams centering on five major program clusters: transportation, medicine and health, electronic information, intelligent manufacturing, and food and pharmaceuticals. It has established long-term strategic partnerships with leading enterprises such as China Railway Zhengzhou Group Co., Ltd. and Zhengzhou Metro Group to jointly tackle key technical problems. In the past five years, it has undertaken 195 scientific research projects at and above departmental level, published 601 high-level papers indexed by SCI, EI and Chinese core journals, and obtained 822 authorized patents. It has achieved fruitful high-level scientific research outcomes, undertaking 2 National Natural Science Foundation projects, winning 5 Henan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards, and securing 292 authorized invention patents. It has undertaken a total of 147 horizontal technical service and training projects, with annual incoming funds reaching 13.2586 million yuan. Thirty-one scientific and technological achievements have been commercialized, generating 3.666 million yuan in transformation revenue, demonstrating solid scientific research strength and sustained innovation capacity.

Over more than 70 years since its founding, the university has cultivated nearly 200,000 intermediate and senior applied technical and managerial talents, providing robust human resources and intellectual support for national rail transit construction and economic and social development. In recent years, seizing development opportunities, the university has actively integrated into the Belt and Road Initiative, responded to Henan’s opening-up drive, and strived to elevate its internationalization level.
