Yinchuan Energy Institute was founded in 1999. In 2012, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to be upgraded to an ordinary undergraduate college. In 2016, it was granted the right to grant a bachelor's degree.

The school has four campuses, namely Wangtai Campus, Binhe Campus, Hequanhu Campus and Minning Campus. The campus covers an area of 995000 square meters, the total building area of the school buildings is 410000 square meters, the area of teaching and administrative rooms is 240000 square meters, 182 experimental training rooms, and the total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is more than 100 million yuan. It has the largest single library in Ningxia, with a collection of 1.2 million books. The school covers 19 provinces in China, with more than 15,000 full-time students and nearly 800 teachers. The number of teachers with master's degree accounts for 68% of the total number of teachers, and the number of "double qualified" teachers accounts for 33% of the total number of teachers.

The school offers 37 undergraduate majors, covering 8 disciplines including engineering, management, economics and literature. It has one autonomous region level advantageous characteristic discipline and one key discipline, three autonomous region level key construction majors in the 13th Five Year Plan, five autonomous region level industry education integration talent training demonstration majors, 12 autonomous region level first-class undergraduate major construction sites, three autonomous region level experimental teaching demonstration centers, and three autonomous region level off campus practical education bases for college students.

Over the past 23 years since its establishment, the school has adhered to the motto of "being virtuous, thoughtful and practical", implemented the development strategy of "building the university with quality, prospering the university with characteristics and strengthening the university with talents", always adhered to the training of high-quality application-oriented talents, and served the school running orientation of local economic and social development, and has cultivated more than 30000 graduates of all kinds.

Through years of discipline and specialty construction, the school has formed a school running feature focusing on energy and chemical industry. It has been awarded the "Special Contribution Award for Yinchuan Economic Construction" by Yinchuan City, the "Fourth National Excellent Award for Educational Reform and Innovation" by China Education News, and the "National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Practice Training Base Construction Award" by China Private Education Association, and has been selected into the ZTE ICT Industry and Education Integration Innovation Base Project by the Ministry of Education, Now, it is a member of the National Alliance of Applied Technology Universities (Colleges), and a counterpart of Fujian Nanjing Fuzhou University to help build a pilot university for the transformation and development of local undergraduate colleges in Ningxia.

There are 15,000 full-time students in the school, including 7,541 undergraduates, 5 international students and 637 teachers. There are 800 self-owned full-time teachers and 143 teachers with associate high titles or above, accounting for 32.35% of self-owned full-time teachers. There are 287 master and doctoral degree teachers, accounting for 64.93% of their own full-time teachers; There are 156 "double-qualified" teachers, accounting for 35.29% of full-time teachers.

At present, there are 1 dominant discipline, 1 key discipline, 1 dominant specialty, 3 key (cultivation) construction specialties, 5 demonstration specialties for training talents with integration of production and education, 7 first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites, 3 experimental teaching demonstration centers and 3 off-campus practical education bases for college students. Since its establishment 21 years ago, under the correct leadership of the Party Committee and Government of the autonomous region, and with the care and support of the Education Department, Yinchuan City and all sectors of society, the school has always adhered to the orientation of training applied talents and serving the local economic and social development, adhering to the school motto of "Mingde is good at thinking, being practical and sensitive", implementing the development strategy of "building a school with quality, developing a school with characteristics and strengthening a school with talents", keeping up with market demand, actively promoting school-enterprise cooperation and continuously deepening production. In response to the national call for precise poverty alleviation, the school actively carried out various vocational skills training and appraisal for enterprises, urban and rural areas, and helped more than 13,000 employees of enterprises and urban and rural laborers to train. The school actively carried out foreign cooperation in running schools, and successively established long-term and stable cooperative relations with 12 universities outside the country (territory), which made significant contributions to the foreign exchanges and cooperation of Ningxia higher education. It has been selected into the Ministry of Education-ZTE ICT Industry-Education Integration Innovation Base Project, and is now the governing unit of the National Universities of Applied Sciences (College) Alliance, with Fujian-Ningxia University cooperating with Fuzhou University to assist universities, and a pilot institution for transformation and development of local undergraduate universities in Ningxia.
