Yan'an University
Yan'an University is the first comprehensive university named by Comrade Mao Zedong himself and founded by the Communist Party of China. It is now a university jointly built by the People's Government of Shaanxi Province and the Ministry of Education, a high-level university in Shaanxi Province, a first-class admission institution in Shaanxi Province, and a recommended institution for excellent fresh undergraduates to be exempted from taking master's degree.
In July 1941, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee decided to merge Shaanbei Public School, China Women's University and Zedong Youth Cadre School to establish Yan'an University, with its first president Wu Yuzhang. Later, from 1943 to 1944, Lu Xun Academy of Arts and Letters, Academy of Natural Sciences, New Writing Cadre School, Academy of Nationalities and Academy of Administration were merged into Yan'an University one after another. After the victory of the war, according to the deployment of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, most of Yan'an University moved to the northeast and north China to run schools, pushing the new education of new democracy to the whole country. In June 1949, the Northwest Bureau of the CPC Central Committee decided to change the name of Yan'an University to Northwest People's Revolutionary University and move it to Xi'an. In September 1958, in order to meet the needs of the development of various undertakings in the old areas of northern Shaanxi, the CPC Shaanxi Provincial Committee and Shaanxi People's Committee decided to restore and rebuild Yan'an University in Yan'an, and a group of old Yan'an adults, such as Guo Yi, Fu Jinhua, Gao Chengzhai, Wang Yunfeng and Zhang Xunbin, returned to their alma mater for a second time to start their own schools. In 1998, Yan'an Medical College, Yan'an People's Hospital and Yan'an University merged to form the new Yan'an University, which was listed as a key university in Shaanxi Province. 2005, the university was listed as a university jointly built by Shaanxi Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, and in 2011, it was listed as a high-level university in Shaanxi Province.
On May 24, 1944, Comrade Mao Zedong personally attended the opening ceremony of Yan'an University and delivered an important speech. On May 24, 2004, Hu Jintao gave an important instruction to Yan'an University, asking all parties to "jointly support the running of Yan'an University". On September 19, 2017, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Yan'an University, General Secretary Xi Jinping gave an important instruction, "On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Yan'an University, I would like to extend my warm congratulations to all teachers and students. For a long time, Yan'an University has been adhering to the philosophy of education for the public, learning to apply, and has trained a number of outstanding talents who have made important contributions to national liberation, revolutionary victory and the construction of the old areas. The university has three campuses: Xincheng, Yangjialing and Zuiyuan, covering an area of more than 2,800 mu, with a total building area of 1.08 million square meters.
