The medical education of the school started from Huimin Hospital Nursing School in 1922, and Plain Medical School was established in 1950. Since then, the school experienced the second North China medical school, Xinxiang Medical College, etc. In 1962, the school was renamed as North Henan Medical College; in 1982, it was upgraded to undergraduate, named Xinxiang Medical College; in 1998, it was granted the right to confer master's degree. The school's medical education began in 1922, when Huimin Hospital Nursing School was established. On May 22, 2025, the Ministry of Education proposed to agree to change the name of Xinxiang Medical College to Henan Medical University. On June 9, 2025, the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China officially issued a letter agreeing to change the name of Xinxiang Medical College to Henan Medical University.
As of December 2023, the university covers a total area of 2,669,900 square meters, with a property area of 1,334,900 square meters and a total building area of 1,225,900 square meters; it has 28 teaching colleges and offers 37 undergraduate majors; it has 12 master's degree authorization points for first-level disciplines, and 10 master's degree authorization points for professional degrees; it has a faculty and staff of more than 15,000 people (including five clinical colleges) and nearly 30,000 students of various types.
