

In 1924, the predecessor of Xinjiang University-Xinjiang Russian Law and Politics College was founded, which opened the prelude of higher education in Xinjiang.
In 1935, the school was transformed into Xinjiang College. During the period of War of Resistance against Japan, a group of communists such as Yu Xiusong and Lin Jilu, and a group of progressives such as Mao Dun, Zhang Zhongshi, a philosopher, and Zhao Dan, an artist, came to the school to teach, and put forward the educational thought of "taking the nation as the form and taking Marxism-Leninism as the content", which set off a vigorous campaign to resist Japan and save the nation, and the school was praised as "the second in resisting the Great".
In 1950, the People's Government of Xinjiang Province merged the former Provincial Language Institute into Xinjiang University, and renamed Xinjiang University as Xinjiang University for Nationalities. In 1954, Xinjiang University for Nationalities was renamed Xinjiang University.
In 1955, when Yang Xiufeng, Minister of Higher Education, visited Xinjiang University, he instructed to build Xinjiang University on the basis of Xinjiang University. In May 1959, the Ministry of Higher Education decided that Peking University, Tsinghua University and Northwest University would support the establishment of Xinjiang University. In 1960, Xinjiang University was formally established, and the school entered a new development period.
In 1978, the school was identified by the State Council as one of the first batch of 88 key institutions of higher learning and one of 16 comprehensive key universities in China. In 1997, the school was listed as one of the first batch of "211 Project" key universities in China.
In 2000, Xinjiang University merged with the former Xinjiang Institute of Technology to form a new Xinjiang University. The former Xinjiang Institute of Technology was formerly the Mining Technical School of Sino-Soviet Nonferrous Metals Company, which was jointly founded by China and the Soviet Union in 1953. In 1954, the Soviet Union handed over the shares of the school to China, and the school was changed to self-run and renamed Urumqi Mining School. Xinjiang Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was established in 1958 under the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, and changed its name to Xinjiang Institute of Technology in 1966.
In 2004, the school became a "co-construction" university of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region People's Government and Ministry of Education. In 2012, the school was listed as the national "Comprehensive Strength Enhancement Project of Universities in Central and Western China".
In 2017, it entered the ranks of the first batch of 42 first-class universities in China. In 2018, it was identified as a "Ministry-District Joint Construction" university between the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The school has 26 colleges, 1 graduate school, 2 teaching and research departments, 36 party and government organs and auxiliary teaching units.
At present, the school has nine disciplines: economics, law, literature, history, science, engineering, management, art and philosophy, which cover the main fields of high-level specialized personnel training and scientific research. There are 2 national key disciplines (Chinese minority language and literature, applied mathematics), 1 national key cultivation discipline (population, resources and environmental economics), and 3 double first-class key construction disciplines (Marxist theory, chemistry, computer science and technology). Six autonomous region-level peak disciplines, seven autonomous region-level plateau disciplines and three disciplines (chemistry, engineering and materials) have entered the top 1% of ESI in the world. In the fourth round of national discipline assessment, 7 disciplines entered Class B disciplines and 9 disciplines entered Class C disciplines. There are 14 first-class disciplines authorized by doctoral degree, 34 first-class disciplines authorized by master's degree, 12 postdoctoral research mobile stations and 18 master's degree categories, which are the universities with the most degree authorization and the most complete degree authorization system in Xinjiang. The school has 95 undergraduate majors, including 69 enrollment majors; There are 29 national-level first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites, 9 provincial-level first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites, 10 specialties with national characteristics, 18 specialties with shortage of talents in autonomous regions and 12 key specialties in autonomous regions.
In the past three years, Xinjiang University has an average annual scientific research expenditure of 233 million yuan, undertaking 1,495 scientific research projects of various types, undertaking 25 major key projects such as national key research and development projects, NSFC- Xinjiang Joint Fund key projects, and major bidding projects of the National Social Science Fund, and undertaking 759 horizontal projects entrusted by enterprises and institutions, including 39 horizontal projects of over one million year
At present, there are 43 scientific research platforms (teams) at or above the provincial level in science and engineering, among which 1 State Key Laboratory is jointly established by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 State Key Laboratory Cultivation Base is jointly established by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 1 International Science and Technology Cooperation Research Base. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Education jointly established a collaborative innovation center; 3 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education and 14 key laboratories of the autonomous region; 1 engineering research center of the Ministry of Education, 1 information technology research center, 6 engineering technology research centers of the autonomous region and 1 research center of the people's government of the autonomous region; 1 field scientific observation and research station of the Ministry of Education; There are 1 innovation team in key areas of Ministry of Science and Technology, 4 innovation teams in Ministry of Education and 7 innovation teams in Tianshan of Autonomous Region.
The university has 14 scientific research platforms of humanities and social sciences at or above the provincial level. Among them, 1 research base for the consciousness of the Chinese nation community has been firmly established, 1 collaborative innovation center has been jointly established by the Ministry of National Security Research, 1 sub-center of the belt and road initiative National Regional Research Center of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, 1 key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, and 11 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of the autonomous region. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Education jointly established a collaborative innovation center.
There are 34,792 students in Xinjiang University, including 21,604 ordinary undergraduates, 12,143 master's students, 881 doctoral students, 164 international students and 4,708 adult junior college students.
The university has 1,979 full-time teachers, 942 full-time teachers with senior titles and 914 teachers with doctoral degrees. The university is an accepting unit of the program of studying abroad sent by the China Scholarship Council, and a school of Shanghai Cooperation Organization University, Chinese government scholarship self-enrollment, Confucius Institute scholarship and Xinjiang government scholarship program. The school has successively signed educational exchange and scientific research cooperation agreements (memorandums) with more than 80 universities and educational scientific research institutions in 27 countries and regions. It has established the Russian Center of Xinjiang University and the test center of Russian as a foreign language, and has practice bases in many universities in Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and other countries. Set up three Confucius Institutes in Kyrgyzstan and Russia.
Since the launch of the new round of counterpart support in 2010, with the strong support of the Ministry of Education, Xinjiang University has been built by 12 colleges with Tsinghua University as the team leader, Xi 'an Jiaotong University, Wuhan University, Central South University and Renmin University of China as deputy teams, and Beijing Normal University, Dalian University of Technology, Tongji University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Donghua University, China University of Mining and Technology and Sun Yat-sen University as members. Since 2019, six universities including Northeast Normal University, Xiamen University, Tianjin University, East China University of Science and Technology, beijing university of chemical technology and University of Electronic Science and Technology of China have established counterpart cooperation with our school. At present, there are 18 colleges and universities supporting (cooperating) Xinjiang University.
The main campus, the south campus and the north campus cover a total area of 2.909 million square meters (about 4,363 acres). In 2019, the new campus project of Xinjiang University was approved for construction. The project is located in Hemaquan New District, Shuimogou District, Urumqi, with a planned land area of about 2.47 million square meters (3,711 acres) and a planned total construction area of 1.25 million square meters.
The total value of fixed assets of the school is about 2.35 billion yuan, and the total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is 780 million yuan. The library is the provincial center of China Higher Education Document Guarantee System (CALIS), with a total of 3.465 million books and documents. The main nodes of campus network and CERNET in Xinjiang, the control center of Xinjiang education regional network and Urumqi education metropolitan area network have been built. It has a modern digital library and a first-class multifunctional gymnasium in Northwest China.
