Xinjiang Normal University is a key normal college in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education in December 1978. Its predecessor was Urumqi First Normal School and Xinjiang Teacher Training Department. Xinjiang Normal University is one of the first batch of newly established universities in China after the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, bathed in the spring breeze of the reform and opening-up cause of the Party and the country, and has been growing and sharing the fate with the reform and opening-up for more than 40 years, and has embarked on a path of rapid development. The university covers an area of 2435 mu and is divided into three campuses: Wenquan, Kunlun and Wenguang, which are located at No.100 Guanjing Road, Shuimogou District, No.102 Xinyi Road, Shayibake District and No.16 Kashi East Road, New City. Hot Spring Campus is the main campus and administrative center of the school. The teaching area covers an area of 1994 mu, and undertakes the education and training tasks of undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in liberal arts and preparatory education. At present, Kunlun Campus mainly undertakes the tasks of undergraduate and graduate students majoring in science and art, as well as continuing education, distance education, training of teachers and cadres, and education of international students. Wenguang Campus mainly undertakes the task of specialized training.

There are 20 colleges in the school, among which Marxist College is the national key Marxist College. In 1993, the school was authorized by the master's unit, and in 2013, it was authorized by the doctor's unit. At present, there are 6 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points and 1 education doctoral degree point, 19 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 11 master's degree authorization points, 99 two disciplines master's degree points, 62 undergraduate majors, and disciplines and specialties cover 10 disciplines.

The university has 2 affiliated kindergartens, 1 primary school, 2 junior high schools and 1 high school, with a total of more than 5,500 students, all of whom are schools of higher quality in Xinjiang, among which the high school is a model high school and a model moral education school in the autonomous region. It has won the National Education System Reform Pilot Project School, the Autonomous Region Advanced School of Moral Education and Scientific Research, and the first Peking University Pre-course Base in the Autonomous Region.

After long-term efforts, the school has formed a complete education system including ordinary junior college students' education, postgraduate education, basic education, adult continuing education, foreign students' education and preparatory education.

The university has 2163 faculty members, including 1683 undergraduates, 480 affiliated middle schools, primary schools and kindergartens. There are 1088 full-time teachers in the university department, including 166 senior teachers and 329 deputy senior teachers, with the proportion of senior titles reaching 45.5%. At present, there are 5 experts enjoying special allowance from the State Council, 1 national famous cultural artist and "Four Groups of Talents" (theoretical circle), 3 autonomous regional famous cultural artists and "Four Groups of Talents" (theoretical circle), 1 autonomous regional famous cultural artist and "Four Groups of Talents" (literary and art circles), 2 leading talents in Tianshan of the autonomous region, 10 "Tianchi Special Appointment Program" of the autonomous region, and "Tianshan Talents of the autonomous region".

There are 27,599 college students at all levels, including 20,048 college students, 3,751 graduate students (232 doctoral students and 3,519 master students), 302 international students and 3,498 mainland preparatory students.

The university pays attention to connotation construction and quality improvement, and has made outstanding achievements in teaching management and reform. In recent years, it has won 24 teaching achievement awards at autonomous region level, including 4 national specialty majors, 11 national first-class majors, 1 national excellent course, 1 national excellent video open course and 1 national first-class course. There are 6 first-class undergraduate majors at autonomous region level, 26 first-class courses at autonomous region level, 11 undergraduate majors in short supply of talents and key construction at autonomous region level, 5 experimental teaching demonstration centers at autonomous region level and 12 excellent courses at autonomous region level.

Focusing on the major strategic needs of the country and the autonomous region, the school promotes the innovation and development of basic research and its close integration with applied research, continuously improves the level of scientific research and the ability of social service, provides strong support for the economic and social development of the autonomous region, and gradually becomes an intelligence, thought and talent pool serving the overall goal of Xinjiang's work, and serving "administering Xinjiang according to law, uniting and stabilizing Xinjiang, moistening Xinjiang by culture, enriching people and developing Xinjiang for a long time". At present, the school has one national international joint research center, including 22 autonomous region discipline platforms and more than 20 university-level scientific research platforms, such as the National Key Marxist Institute, the National University Students' Cultural Quality Education Base, the National University Counselor Development Research Center, the Autonomous Region Key Discipline, the Autonomous Region Key Laboratory, and the Autonomous Region University Humanities and Social Sciences Key Research Base.

The university has 37 teaching, professional and research laboratories, 468 multimedia classrooms (including recording and broadcasting rooms), 6 language laboratories, 14 wisdom classrooms, 27 public computer rooms, 1 VR laboratory, 6 calligraphy classrooms, 1 micro-classroom, 1 lecture hall, 1 teaching observation room and 2 centralized control centers. The library covers an area of 56,000 square meters, with a collection of 1.719 million books, 1,281 professional journals, more than 130,000 selected electronic journals, 400,000 electronic books and 34 databases of various types.

Journal of Xinjiang Normal University publishes philosophy and social sciences (Chinese), natural sciences (Chinese), philosophy and social sciences (Uyghur) and bilingual education research. Among them, Journal of Xinjiang Normal University (Chinese Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition) is the only comprehensive academic journal of social science in Xinjiang that has been selected as one of the five (all) cores, and also the only comprehensive academic journal that has been selected as the key financial aid of the National Social Science Fund in Xinjiang, and has been rated as "Excellent Journal of the National Social Science Fund" by the National Office of Philosophy and Social Sciences. Won the title of "2016-2020 Most Popular Journals" and "2020 Most Popular Journals of Comprehensive Humanities and Social Sciences" by the National Philosophy and Social Sciences Literature Center; The composite index is 4.069, and the comprehensive index of journals is 3.119, both of which rank first among 2,337 journals of liberal arts in China. 

The university attaches great importance to foreign exchanges and cooperation, actively carries out scientific research, personnel training, social services, cultural exchanges and cooperation with domestic universities, realizes the joint training of undergraduates and postgraduates with the University of Science and Technology of China and East China Normal University, and establishes long-term cooperative relations with more than 20 universities outside Russia, Japan, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Teachers' overseas study, study visits and academic exchanges have become normal. The school has hired foreign experts to teach all the year round, and invited famous experts and scholars at home and abroad to give lectures and exchanges. The school has three Confucius Institutes in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, which have been awarded the title of "Advanced Confucius Institutes" by Hanban. It is the "Demonstration Base for Overseas Students Education in China" of the Ministry of Education, "Chinese Language Promotion Base in Central Asia", and a Chinese project institution organized by Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
