The university, formerly known as Bayi Agricultural College, was founded in 1952 by General Wang Zhen with the consent of Chairman Mao and the Central Military Commission on the basis of the Second Infantry university of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, which was subordinate to the Xinjiang Military Region and was the first new formal university founded by the Chinese Communist Party in Xinjiang after the founding of New China. In 1958, it was transferred to the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and renamed as Xinjiang Bayi Agricultural College, and in 1995, it was approved by the State Education Commission and renamed as Xinjiang Agricultural University. In 2006, it was awarded "Excellent" by the Ministry of Education in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching, and in 2012, it was selected as one of the colleges and universities in the Midwest for the infrastructure capacity building project, and in 2014, it was jointly built by the People's Government of the autonomous region and the former State Forestry Administration. The university has four campuses, including Old Mancheng, Yaxin, Lugang and Tiangeer, and 7 university-affiliated practice bases and 365 off-campus teaching practice bases, including Xiejiagou Grassland Experiment Station and Hutubi Grassland Experiment and Demonstration Station. Among them, the old Mancheng campus (the main campus) covers an area of about 1,500 mu, Yaxin campus covers an area of about 500 mu, Lugang campus covers an area of about 4,000 mu, and Tiangeer campus (internship forestry) covers an area of about 150,000 mu.
