Xi'an Railway Vocational & Technical Institute was founded in 1956. Its predecessors were the former Xi'an Railway Transportation School and the former Xi'an Railway Transportation Workers' University, and it was one of the ten key secondary specialized schools of the former Ministry of Railways nationwide. It was upgraded to Xi'an Railway Institute to offer undergraduate education in 1958, restored to the secondary specialized school system in 1961, merged and upgraded to one of the first full-time higher vocational and technical colleges in Shaanxi Province in 2001, and formally transferred from Xi'an Railway Bureau to Xi'an Municipal People's Government in September 2005. The campus covers a total area of 1,491.94 mu, with a total school building area of 467,000 square meters, fixed assets of nearly 900 million yuan, and 16,094 students.
Born and thriving with railways, over the nearly 70 years since its establishment, the Institute has always focused on the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, adhered to the original aspiration and mission of "cultivating talents for the Party and the country", upheld the school-running philosophy of "running the school without derailing, educating people without departing from the right path", fully practiced the school motto of "Virtue, Discipline, Strength, and Practice", and forged the college spirit of "Initiative, Responsibility, Thoroughness, and Dedication".
It is now a National Civilized Campus, one of the first national "1+X" certificate pilot institutions, a national modern apprenticeship pilot unit, a leading unit of the National Demonstrative Vocational Education Group, a national vocational education "double-qualified" teacher training base, a Shaanxi Provincial High-level Vocational School, a Shaanxi Provincial Demonstrative Higher Vocational College, and a Shaanxi Provincial First-class Higher Vocational College. It has successively won more than 300 provincial and ministerial-level or higher honors, such as the National Advanced Unit in Vocational Education, the National Model Branch of University Party Building Work, the National Red Flag Youth League Committee, the National Demonstrative "One-stop" Student Community in Colleges and Universities, and the Advanced Collective in Graduate Employment Work of Shaanxi Higher Education Institutions.
The Institute is one of the higher vocational colleges with a long history and important influence in running rail transit-related majors.
