Wuhu Vocational and Technical University is a public undergraduate level ordinary university approved by the Ministry of Education. The predecessor of the school was Wuhu United University, which was founded in 1983; in 1997, it was renamed Wuhu Vocational and Technical College; in 2000, Wuhu Agricultural School, which has a history of running schools for a hundred years, was merged; merged with Wuhu Information Technology Vocational College in 2012; In 2022, Wuhu Normal School will be merged. In June 2025, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Wuhu Vocational and Technical University based on Wuhu Vocational and Technical College to integrate resources.

For a long time, the construction and development of the school has received great attention and support from the state and local governments. In 2001, it was listed as one of the 31 demonstration vocational and technical college construction units in China by the Ministry of Education. In 2006, it was identified as the first batch of national demonstration higher vocational colleges in China. In 2019, it was identified as a national high-quality school, and at the end of the year, it was selected as a high-level school construction unit of the national "Double High Plan".

The school has Wenjin, Yinhu, Baima, Nanling and other campuses, covering an area of nearly 2,200 acres, a construction area of 740,000 square meters, a total value of teaching instruments and equipment of more than 396 million yuan, with 23 teaching units and Anhui Wuhu Instrumentation Research Institute (Anhui Wuhu Instrumentation Research Co., Ltd.).
