

Wuhan Technical University is a full-time public undergraduate level vocational university under the supervision of the Hubei Provincial Department of Education, and is a national demonstration higher vocational college, a national high-quality junior college higher vocational college, a national "double high plan" high-level professional group (A level) construction unit, a national high-skilled talent training base, a national vocational teacher training key construction base, and a national vocational education "double teacher" teacher training base.
The school's predecessor was Wuhan Vocational and Technical College, founded in 1972 by Yangtze River Telecommunications Technical School; in 1979, it was renamed Wuhan Radio Industry School; In 1998, it merged with Hubei National University of National Defense Science and Technology Industry. In March 1999, it was upgraded to a higher vocational school with the approval of the Ministry of Education and named Wuhan Vocational and Technical College. In 1999, Hubei Electronic Industry School was merged; In 2003, Hubei Textile and Garment Industry School was merged; In 2010, Hubei Province No. 1 Light Industry School and Hubei Province Industrial Design School were merged [4]; In May 2024, the Hubei Provincial Department of Education plans to agree to establish Wuhan Vocational and Technical University on the basis of Wuhan Vocational and Technical College; In January 2025, the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China announced that it plans to set up Wuhan Vocational and Technical University, which is a public vocational college at the undergraduate level; In February of the same year, the Ministry of Education issued a document agreeing to establish Wuhan Vocational and Technical University.
As of June 2025, the school has three campuses, including Optics Valley Campus, Optics Valley East Campus, and Macheng Campus, covering an area of 2,067 acres, with a total fixed asset value of 1.633 billion yuan, including a total value of teaching and research equipment of 303 million yuan, a total collection of 2.54 million books, and 13 secondary colleges (departments), with 6 vocational undergraduate majors and 58 higher vocational majors. There are 1,071 full-time teachers and 16,561 full-time students.
The school currently has three campuses: the Optics Valley Campus, the East Optics Valley Campus, and the Macheng Campus. The campus covers an area of 2,067 mu, with a construction area of 613,200 square meters and a total value of fixed assets of 1.658 billion yuan, of which the total value of teaching and research equipment is 371 million yuan. There are 282 on-campus practical teaching sites and 363 stable off-campus internship bases co-established with enterprises. The library collection totals 2,597,300 volumes, including 1,558,400 printed books and 14 types of digital resources.
The school has 13 teaching institutions: the School of Optoelectronics and Information Engineering, the School of Intelligent Manufacturing, the School of Artificial Intelligence (Xinchuan Industry School), the School of Civil Engineering, the Business School, the School of Intelligent Business, the School of Art and Design, the School of Foreign Languages and International Trade, the School of Tourism and Aviation Services, the School of Fashion and Media, the School of Bioengineering, the School of Marxism, and the Department of Physical and Aesthetic Education. The school adheres to aligning its programs with industry needs, targeting Hubei's "51020" advanced manufacturing industry clusters and the five major modern service industry clusters, and continuously adjusts its program layout. The school currently offers 58 associate degree programs, and in 2025 it plans to launch six full-time undergraduate programs, forming a multi-level talent training system.
