Tianjin Railway Vocational and technical college was formerly known as Tianjin Railway Engineering School and the staff training center of Tianjin Railway Branch. Tianjin railway engineering school, founded in 1951, is one of the first batch of national key technical secondary schools and the national advanced unit of vocational education. From 1958 to 1962, it was transformed into Tianjin Railway College at the professional level; The staff training center of Tianjin Railway Branch was merged by the former Tianjin Railway adult technical secondary school and Tianjin railway transportation technical school in 2000. Tianjin Railway adult technical secondary school was established in 1953. It is a national key adult professional school and recorded as "representative of Chinese staff education" by UNESCO documents. Tianjin railway transportation technical school was established in 1986, It is the first batch of national key technical schools.

In September 2004, in the reform of separating enterprises from running social functions in the railway system, Tianjin Railway Engineering School and the staff training center of Tianjin Railway Branch were transferred to Tianjin at the same time, which was subordinate to Tianjin human resources and Social Security Bureau (formerly Tianjin Labor and Social Security Bureau). In order to meet the needs of the development of rail transit industry, Tianjin Railway Vocational and technical college was established with the approval of Tianjin Municipal People's Government in December 2004. It was filed by the Ministry of education in May 2005 and began enrollment in the same year. In August 2005, Tianjin municipal government approved the establishment of Tianjin Railway Vocational and technical college.

The college is a full-time public general higher vocational college with the characteristics of rail transit specialty approved by Tianjin Municipal People's government and filed by the Ministry of education.
