TianJin University of Sport was established in August 1958. At that time, according to the CPC Hebei Provincial Committee's "policy of popularizing higher education in 10-15 years and the need to adapt to the development of education and sports", and in preparation for the First Games of the People's Republic of China held in Beijing in September 1959, the People's Committee of Hebei Province decided to merge the former Tianjin Sports School and the Department of Physical Education of Shijiazhuang Teachers College in Tianjin, the capital of Hebei Province. The People's Committee of Hebei Province decided to merge the physical education departments of the former Tianjin Sports School and Shijiazhuang Teachers' College in Tianjin, the capital of Hebei Province, while drawing outstanding athletes from the province to form the Tianjin Sports Institute. The mission of the academy was to train athletes, coaches, and some high school and university physical education teachers and higher-level sports professionals. In January 1967, Tianjin was restored as a municipality directly under the central government; in October 1969, the Tianjin Sports Institute was transferred from Hebei Province to the jurisdiction of Tianjin.

At the early stage of its establishment, the school brought together a group of excellent coaches and athletes with high level of competitive sports, and its achievements in wrestling, women's diving, swimming, men's basketball, baseball and other sports have ranked among the top in China. In the first National Games, it won the championship in classical, freestyle and Chinese wrestling. At the same time, a number of famous experts and scholars are teaching at the school, such as Chen Jiaqi, Ma Yu, Niu Xinghua, Chai Wenxiu, Liu Shifan, Zheng Bida, Yao Zhizhen, Zhang Chunji, Ren Fuxing, etc.

The school's Tuanbo campus is located in the health industry park in the western part of Tuanbo New City, Jinghai District, covering an area of 1,115.7 mu, with a total building area of about 388,600 square meters for all kinds of school buildings, which was put into use in November 2017. The total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is more than 190 million yuan. The new library of the university has a construction area of nearly 17,800 square meters, a total existing paper literature collection of 442,000 volumes, 851 paper periodicals, 45 databases, a total of more than 1.04 million e-books and 1.27 million e-journals.

The university has 18 undergraduate majors, covering 6 disciplines of education, management, literature, art, science and medicine, and started to enroll master students in 1979 and obtained the right to confer master's degree in 1986. "In 2013, the university was officially approved as a doctoral degree granting unit by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and the first-level discipline of physical education was approved as a doctoral degree granting discipline. The university has more than 6,500 full-time students, including 4,939 undergraduates, 68 doctoral students, 1,274 master students and 67 international students.

There are 594 faculty members, including 57 full-time faculty members with senior titles and 127 with associate titles; 97 full-time faculty members have doctoral degrees and 286 have master's degrees. The university has been selected as one national excellent teaching team, 14 Tianjin excellent teaching teams, and three Tianjin "12th Five-Year Plan" teaching innovation teams. The university has continuously strengthened the central position of teaching, implemented a series of programs and measures to deepen teaching reform and improve teaching quality, and achieved a number of landmark achievements. 2013, the major of sports human science was approved as the first batch of undergraduate major comprehensive reform pilot in local universities under the "Undergraduate Teaching Project" of the Ministry of Education, and the major of special education was approved as a municipal major comprehensive reform pilot. In 2017, five majors, including physical education, sports training, social sports guidance and management, sports human science and applied psychology, were approved as the construction project of Tianjin city's advantageous characteristic majors, and seven majors, including martial arts and traditional national sports, dance, educational technology, journalism, marketing, special education and sports rehabilitation, were approved as the construction project of Tianjin city's application-oriented majors. The Journal of Tianjin Sports Institute, sponsored by the university, is a source journal of Chinese Social Science Citation Index, a core journal of sports in Chinese Core Journals, a source journal of Science Citation Database, and a core journal of science and technology in China in 2021; it is included as a source journal by more than 10 famous search institutions at home and abroad. In the "2021 Reprint Index Ranking", the Journal was ranked 6th in the number of reprinted journals, 9th in the reprint rate, and 7th in the overall index of kinesiology journals. In 2021, the Journal of Tianjin Institute of Physical Education was ranked No. 9 (Q1) in the impact factor of Chinese academic journals (sports). The Journal of Tianjin Institute of Physical Education was selected and displayed in the "28th Beijing International Book Fair".

The university attaches importance to open schooling, and constantly strengthens foreign cooperation and exchange, and has established inter-university friendly relations with more than 20 foreign famous universities and sports professional colleges, such as the United States, Britain, Australia, Italy, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Poland and Germany. The university insists on serving the national strategies of "One Belt, One Road" and "Chinese Culture Going Out", and is the first one to establish "Tianjin Wushu Cultural Experience Base for International Students" in Tianjin universities. It also hosted the 19th IAPESGW World Congress, built the Luban Workshop with Tianjin Medical College, promoted the strategy of "going out" of Chinese martial arts, and enhanced the influence and popularity of the school at home and abroad.
