Tarim University was founded in October 1958. The school was founded by General Wang Zhen, then the Minister of Agriculture and Reclamation, who had been the honorary president until his death. Tarim University was one of the first undergraduate universities authorized by the Academic Degrees Committee of The State Council to confer bachelor's degrees. In 2003, it was authorized to confer master's degrees. In 2004, it was renamed Tarim University with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2018, it was granted the right to award doctoral degrees, and in 2019, it entered the pilot universities of the "Three Full Education" comprehensive reform of the Ministry of Education, and won the "National May Day Labor Award" in the same year. In 2020, it was awarded "National Demonstration Unit of National Unity and Progress". In 2021, it will be awarded "National Advanced Collective in Poverty alleviation". In 2024, it will become an institution to recruit and train international students in China. The university is jointly built by Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and the Ministry of Education.
