Taiyuan University of Science and Technology is the first heavy machinery undergraduate university in New China. It is a multi-disciplinary university with distinctive school-running characteristics, as well as an important talent training and scientific research and development base in the field of major technical equipment. The university was selected as an excellent university in the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of Education (2006) and a supported university in the Basic Capacity Construction Project of Central and Western Universities of the Ministry of Education (2016).

In 1952, the school was founded as Shanxi Provincial Machinery Manufacturing Industrial School. Mr. Zhi Bingyuan, the founder of modern Chinese machinery industry and a pioneer in the development of internal combustion engine in China, became the president. 1953 The school was assigned to the First Ministry of Machinery Industry of the Central Government. 1955 Changchun Automobile School, Hankou Machine Manufacturing School forging and stamping major merged. 1960 It was renamed Taiyuan Heavy Machinery College. 1965 Dalian Institute of Technology, Shenyang Institute of Mechanical and Electrical lifting machinery major merged. In 1998, it was changed to focus on provincial co-construction and provincial management. 2004 It was renamed Taiyuan University of Science and Technology.

Adhering to the spirit of "carrying forward with heavy burdens, practicing truth-seeking", after nearly 70 years of unremitting efforts, the school has developed into a major engineering, arts and science as two wings, equipment manufacturing mainstream disciplines with distinctive features, science, engineering, law, literature, economics, management, art, education and other eight disciplines support each other. A teaching and research university with a reasonable connection between bachelor's, master's and doctor's education.

The university has 66 undergraduate majors, including 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major, 5 national characteristic majors, 7 provincial characteristic majors, 6 provincial advantage specialties, 11 provincial brand majors, 7 national first-class majors, 25 provincial first-class majors, and 7 majors certified as engineering education majors. There are 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 2 virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual Teaching and Research Office construction project, 1 national curriculum Ideological and political demonstration course, 1 provincial recognized industrial college. 58 first-class courses at provincial level or above.

The university has 1 provincial-level "1331 Engineering" advantageous characteristic discipline, 2 service industry innovation discipline groups, 3 provincial-level key disciplines and 15 provincial-level key construction disciplines. Engineering, computer science and materials Science are ranked among the top 1% of ESI in the world. It has 3 doctorate programs in first-level disciplines and 18 master's programs in first-level disciplines. It has 10 professional master's degree programs in Business Administration (MBA), Law, Social Work, Electronic Information, machinery, Materials and Chemicals, Resources and Environment, Energy and Power, transportation, and Engineering Management. It also has postdoctoral research stations in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering.

The university has 1 national collaborative innovation center; 1 National key laboratory cultivation base jointly built by province and Ministry; 1 Engineering Research Center, Ministry of Education; 1 national and local joint Engineering Research Center; 7 provincial key laboratories, 14 provincial engineering (technology) research centers, 8 provincial (science and technology) innovation teams; 3 provincial key research bases of humanities and Social sciences; 1 provincial key Marxist College; 2 provincial collaborative innovation centers; 1 provincial pilot test base; 14 other types of platforms.

The university has 1,422 full-time teachers, including 671 teachers with senior titles, 69 doctoral supervisors and 567 master supervisors. It gathers a group of high-level talents represented by Changjiang Scholars, tens of millions of talents, New century Outstanding Talents of the Ministry of Education, young and middle-aged top-notch talents, young academic leaders, academic technology leaders, 333 Talents and Young Scholars in Shanxi Province. There are 6 provincial key innovation teams. In 2017, Professor Huang Qingxue, Director of the Heavy Machinery Engineering Center of the Ministry of Education, was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

At present, the university has more than 28,000 full-time students. It has excellent teaching resources such as innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration bases for national and provincial college students, off-campus practice bases for college students, experimental teaching demonstration centers, high-quality courses and high-quality video open courses. The university has the Ministry of Education Data China "Hundred School Engineering" Big data application innovation Center and the Ministry of Education ICT Industry and Education Integration Innovation Base. The mechanical design, manufacturing and automation major of the university was the first to pass the engineering education professional certification in Shanxi Province, and the employment rate of its graduates has been among the top of universities in the province for more than ten consecutive years.

Since the "11th Five-Year Plan", the University has won 4 National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 National Technological Invention Award, 1 Ho Liang Ho Li Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award and more than 40 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. It has participated in many national major scientific research projects and national key projects. In 2015, the number of authorized national invention patents ranked among the top 20 universities in China. Since 2016, the university has been among the first in Shanxi Province in terms of total financial support in the "1331 Project" construction.

The university is an active advocate and pioneer of industry-university-research cooperation. In 2001, the University jointly established the Industry-University-research Board of Directors with more than 40 leading machinery manufacturing enterprises in China, such as the Heavy Weight Group, TiSCO Group, Liugong Group, Xugong Group and Shantui Group. It has established industry-university-research strategic cooperation (alliance) with more than 200 enterprises in China, such as Sany Heavy Industry, Citic Heavy Industry, Zhonglian Heavy Industry, Xugong, Liugong, Luoyang Bearing, etc., and cooperated with Jiangsu Hai 'an County to build Hai 'an Forging Equipment Industry Research Institute, and Jincheng City, Shanxi Province to build Jincheng Industrial Technology Innovation Research Institute.

Since its founding, the University has cultivated nearly 130,000 outstanding students and alumni from all sectors of the national economy, many of whom have grown into outstanding scientists, first-class engineers and outstanding entrepreneurs. Chen Zhonggui, chief designer of the Beidou-3, Zhao Yangsheng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang Min, chairman of Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group Co., LTD., Yue Puyu, chairman of Taiyuan Heavy Machinery Group Co., LTD., Zhang Xiuwen, chairman of Shantui Construction Machinery Co., LTD., and Zhao Donghai, chairman of Luoyang Bearing Group Co., LTD., are outstanding among them.

Adhering to the international educational route, the University has established friendly cooperative relations with dozens of foreign universities, such as Auburn University, University of North Carolina, University of North Florida, San Francisco State University, University of Wollongong, Kyoto Women's University and Toyobashi Creative University. Jointly carry out "2+2", "3+1" and other international cooperation training programs for college students and exchange visits of teachers.
