Taiyuan University originated from the new Taiyuan University established in December 2002 through the merger of the original Taiyuan University, Taiyuan Normal School and Taiyuan Institute of Education. Approved by the Ministry of Education in April 2013, it was upgraded to a full-time comprehensive general undergraduate university and renamed Taiyuan University. The university obtained the bachelor’s degree awarding right in 2017 and became one of the first construction units of applied undergraduate universities in Shanxi Province in 2022. In September 2023, it successfully passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation by the Ministry of Education, marking a new leap in talent cultivation quality and school-running level, and entering a new stage of building a first-class applied undergraduate university in Shanxi. The university is under the leadership of the People’s Government of Shanxi Province, managed by the People’s Government of Taiyuan City, and guided professionally by the Shanxi Provincial Department of Education.

Located in Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi Province with a 2,500-year history and profound Sanjin cultural heritage, the university enjoys superior geographical advantages. It consists of three campuses: Fendong Campus, Binhe Campus and Fudong Campus. The Fendong Campus is situated at the core of the Central Shanxi Urban Agglomeration, Taiyuan Metropolitan Area and Shanxi Transformation and Comprehensive Reform Demonstration Zone, featuring convenient information exchange and accessible transportation.

The university covers an area of 1,681 mu with a building area of 477,700 square meters. The total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment reaches 176 million yuan. The library houses 1.72 million paper books and 1.222 million e-books. Recruiting students from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions nationwide, the university currently has 16,490 full-time students.

Rooted in profound red heritage, the university boasts distinctive cultural characteristics. Its school-running history can be traced back to Shanxi Official Normal School founded in 1905, Shanxi Provincial Women’s Normal School founded in 1910 and Shanxi Provincial National Normal School founded in 1919. With a long history and rich cultural accumulation, these schools are known as the "cradle of talents" and "furnace of revolution". Many older-generation proletarian revolutionaries including Xu Xiangqian, Bo Yibo, Cheng Zihua, Li Xuefeng and Wang Shiying, as well as modern female writer and revolutionary activist Shi Pingmei once studied here, received Marxist-Leninist enlightenment and embarked on revolutionary paths. Inheriting fine traditions and revolutionary culture, the university has formed the school motto of "Erudition, Perseverance, Practice and Perfection" and the school spirit of "Integrity, Diligence, Pragmatism and Responsibility" through long-term cultural accumulation. While strengthening internal cultural construction, it actively undertakes social cultural guidance responsibilities.

The university prioritizes faculty construction through talent introduction and cultivation. It currently has 1,193 faculty members, including 773 full-time teachers. Among full-time teachers, 307 have associate senior and above professional titles, accounting for 40.1%; 959 hold doctoral or master’s degrees, accounting for 80.4%; 380 are dual-qualified teachers, accounting for 49.5%. The faculty includes 1 expert enjoying the State Council Special Government Allowance, 1 provincial famous teacher and 5 provincial academic leaders, forming a diversified teaching team led by renowned experts, supported by backbone teachers and cultivated through university-enterprise cooperation. In the past three years, the university has undertaken 265 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research projects, including 1 National Natural Science Foundation project and 1 Ministry of Education humanities and social science project, and signed 162 horizontal scientific research contracts. In 2025, it signed 138 horizontal research contracts with a total research fund of over 16.55 million yuan, hitting a record high since the university’s upgrading. Faculty members have published 1,165 papers in total, including 334 high-level core papers, released 74 academic works, obtained 56 national patents and won 5 provincial and above scientific research awards. The university has built 14 high-level innovative research teams.

Focusing on engineering disciplines, the university devotes itself to cultivating high-quality applied talents. Adhering to the fundamental task of fostering virtue and talents and the educational philosophy of "Uphold Morality, Equip Competence, Pursue Knowledge and Practice Diligently", it cultivates well-rounded high-level applied talents with solid foundation, reasonable knowledge structure, outstanding practical ability, innovative awareness and pragmatic spirit. The university has formed a coordinated multi-disciplinary system dominated by engineering and supplemented by arts, science, economics, agriculture, management, art and law. It has multiple teaching departments and offers 45 undergraduate majors.

The university has 213 experimental and training rooms and 2 training buildings, with an experimental and training area of 29,600 square meters. It actively encourages students to participate in discipline competitions, innovation and entrepreneurship training and vocational qualification examinations, and improves the three-level competition system covering university, provincial and national levels. The number of students participating in innovation and entrepreneurship activities has increased year by year, exceeding 12,000 person-times in 2025. The university has established a complete three-level training system of "training, preparation and competition", continuously improving students’ competitive ability. In the past three years, students have won 502 national awards including 58 first prizes and more than 1,200 provincial awards, including 3 national championships in the RAICOM Robot Competition. A total of 429 college student innovation training programs have been approved, including 77 national and over 190 provincial projects covering cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence. The university ranks 279th in the national university competition ranking and firmly sixth in Shanxi Province.

Based on local development, the university promotes industry-university-research integration. Rooted in Taiyuan, serving Shanxi and radiating across the country, it focuses on new technologies, new economy and new management to support regional industrial transformation and upgrading. The university has established cooperative talent training bases with 184 enterprises, promoting applied technology research and achievement transformation. It has been approved as the construction unit of advantageous characteristic disciplines under the Provincial "1331 Project", the co-construction unit of Shanxi Health Big Data AI Joint Laboratory, the quality improvement project unit of the Big Data Intelligent Diagnosis Industrial College under the "1331 Project", and one of the first provincial pilot units for major industry-education integration platforms and training bases. In 2025, two of its research achievements received positive instructions from major provincial leaders. The university has participated in formulating local industrial standards and provided intellectual and technical support for rural and agricultural development through provincial talent support programs.

The university strives to build high-quality bases for talent training, technological innovation and teacher training. It owns a number of provincial and municipal scientific research platforms, including the Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Perception and Multidimensional Information Processing, Shanxi Engineering Research Center for Unmanned Control of Robot Groups in Coal Mining Faces, Taiyuan Landscape Engineering Technology Center, Jinzhong Characteristic Agricultural Products Pilot Base, and multiple university-level research institutes. These platforms effectively connect industrial demands, promote interdisciplinary and industry-education integration, and support the construction of characteristic applied disciplines.

The Jinzhong Characteristic Agricultural Products Pilot Base is jointly built with local agricultural enterprises. Led by university teachers, the base has formed a 13-member R&D team, equipped with complete office, laboratory facilities and four pilot production lines. It has successfully developed walnut peptide with neuroprotective effects, taken the lead in applying advanced walnut color sorting technology in Shanxi, and completed the pilot production of three new walnut products. It has applied for 1 patent and formulated 2 enterprise standards, effectively boosting local industrial upgrading and rural revitalization.

The university has signed school-local cooperation agreements with multiple government units and school-enterprise cooperation agreements with various enterprises. It has carried out in-depth substantive cooperation with key local enterprises, jointly applied for provincial-level scientific research projects, and carried out academic exchanges and technological research relying on superior enterprise resources.
