Located in Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi Province, Taiyuan Institute of Technology is a full-time general undergraduate university administered by the People’s Government of Shanxi Province. Focusing on engineering and featuring engineering application, it covers multiple disciplines including engineering, science, economics, management, art and education with coordinated development. It is a supported university of the national 13th Five-Year Plan applied undergraduate industry-education integration development project, one of the first pilot universities for applied transformation in Shanxi Province, and a demonstration university for innovation and entrepreneurship education reform in Shanxi Province.

Founded in 1954, the university was formerly North China Fifth Industrial School, a national key technical secondary school established for national defense construction during China’s first Five-Year Plan. It was upgraded to a junior college in 1988 and began to enroll undergraduate students in 1999. Approved by the Ministry of Education in March 2007, it became an independent public provincial undergraduate university and was renamed Taiyuan Institute of Technology. It passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2015 and is a newly-approved construction unit for master’s degree authorization in Shanxi Province. Since 2016, it has signed joint postgraduate training agreements with North University of China, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan University of Science and Technology and Taiyuan Normal University. In 2023, it successfully passed the new round of undergraduate education and teaching audit and evaluation of the Ministry of Education as a provincial pilot university. Over the past 70 years, inheriting the fine traditions of military industry, adhering to the motto of "Unity of Knowledge and Practice, Action Speaks Louder than Words", and carrying forward the university spirit of "Loyalty and Dedication, Pragmatism and Diligence, Self-improvement and Innovation", the university has cultivated nearly 100,000 high-quality applied talents with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor for national defense industry and economic construction.

The university covers a land area of 392,700 square meters and a construction area of 378,900 square meters. Its total fixed assets reach 1.189 billion yuan, including 269 million yuan worth of teaching and research equipment. The library has a collection of 2.4026 million books, including 961,600 e-books. The university is fully equipped with complete teaching, living and sports facilities with continuously improved supporting services.

The university consists of 11 teaching departments and 3 teaching divisions, offering 51 undergraduate majors. It enrolls students from 28 provinces and regions nationwide with 15,962 full-time students. At present, the university has 1,055 faculty members, including 964 full-time teachers. Among them, 333 teachers have senior professional titles and 344 teachers hold doctoral degrees. 96.2% of full-time teachers have master’s or higher degrees. The university has 1 National Excellent Educator, 1 New Century Excellent Talent of the Ministry of Education, 26 provincial high-level talents including provincial leading talents and famous teachers, and 232 dual-qualified teachers. It flexibly introduces 2 national-level talents and employs many renowned domestic and foreign experts as honorary professors and visiting professors.

Adhering to the school-running philosophy of "Foster Virtue, Strengthen Practice, Highlight Application and Serve Society", the university focuses on the construction of applied majors and disciplinary development. It owns 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major for local universities, 7 provincial advantageous and characteristic majors, 8 provincial first-class major construction sites, 5 provincial key supported disciplines, 1 advantageous characteristic discipline of the provincial "1331 Project", and 1 provincial industry-serving discipline group cultivation project. It has 1 national high-quality course, 2 national first-class undergraduate courses, and a number of provincial high-quality courses and first-class courses. The university has built 6 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 1 provincial innovative talent training experimental zone, 15 teaching experimental centers and 176 off-campus training bases. Many textbooks compiled by the university have been listed as national planning textbooks. Since 2017, it has won 25 provincial teaching achievement awards and 42 teaching reform awards at all levels, including 3 national awards and 39 provincial awards. In the 2026 Alumni Association Chinese University Ranking, it ranks 399th nationwide, rising 22 places from 2025, and 12th in Shanxi Province.

The university improves a multi-level discipline competition system and popularizes innovation and entrepreneurship education to enhance students’ employment competitiveness. Its robot team has advanced to the national top 16 eight times in ten years and won championships in the 13th and 24th National University Robot Competitions. Students have achieved outstanding results in more than 50 national competitions. The university has been listed in the TOP 10% of national undergraduate robot competition indexes for three consecutive years and rated Grade A nationwide for two consecutive years. It has entered the national top 100 competition rankings four times and is the only newly-built local undergraduate university with stable top-100 annual rankings. Its applied talent training model has been specially reported by China Education Daily. Approved as a provincial innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration base in 2019, the university became a vice-chairman unit of two national university alliances in 2023. It has formed distinctive school-running characteristics in new materials, new energy and intelligent manufacturing.

Guided by demand-oriented and in-depth integration principles, the university promotes interdisciplinary integration and industry-university-research cooperation. It strengthens external exchanges and cooperation with research institutes, industries and universities, gathers innovative resources, and boosts the coordinated development of talent training, discipline construction, scientific research and social services. The university possesses a number of municipal and provincial-level scientific research platforms including academician workstation, engineering research centers, key laboratories and innovation centers. It was awarded the Top 50 Universities for Industry-Education Integration in China in 2022. The quantity and quality of scientific research achievements such as authorized patents, SCI/EI papers and academic monographs have increased year by year. The university has made continuous breakthroughs in national and provincial major scientific research projects and greatly improved its capacity to serve regional economic and social development.

The university implements an internationalization strategy and actively expands overseas cooperation. It has carried out multi-level international exchanges and talent training cooperation with universities in the United Kingdom, Mongolia, Malaysia, Hungary, South Korea and other countries, providing favorable conditions for teacher overseas study and student overseas development.

The university comprehensively strengthens Party building and ideological and political work. It has 1 national model Party branch for university Party building innovation and entrepreneurship, 1 provincial benchmark college-level Party building unit, 6 provincial model Party branches and 3 provincial double-qualified teacher studio units. It owns 2 provincial first-class ideological and political courses and 1 provincial cultivated first-class ideological and political course, and has won many provincial and national ideological education awards. Its one-stop student community was rated as one of the first national A-level construction units, with its work cases winning national first prize and provincial excellent awards.

The university builds a comprehensive cultural communication platform and creates a positive campus culture atmosphere. It has been awarded many honorary titles such as Shanxi Civilized Unit, Advanced Safe Campus Unit, May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee and Taiyuan Garden-like Model Unit.
