The predecessor of Suzhou City College is Wenzheng College of Soochow University, which was founded in 1998 and was the first public and private secondary college registered with the Ministry of Education in China, and was approved to become an independent college in 2005.In December 2020, the Ministry of Education replied to the People's Government of Jiangsu Province, agreeing that Wenzheng College of Soochow University should be converted into Suzhou City College.

Suzhou City College is an independent undergraduate level public ordinary school of higher education, managed by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province, organised by the People's Government of Suzhou City and supported by Soochow University. The university adheres to the philosophy of "local, applied, open and characteristic" and strives to create a first-class domestic high-level applied university with Chinese characteristics, contemporary features and distinctive characteristics.

The university is located in Suzhou International Education Park in the southwestern part of the ancient city of Suzhou, adjacent to the national Taihu Lake Scenic Spot, with a beautiful natural environment and rich historical and humanistic resources, and was awarded the first batch of "Green Schools (Colleges and Universities) in Jiangsu Province" in 2022. The school library is located in the beautiful scenery of Cuiwei Lake, is the "architecture Nobel Prize" - Pritzker Prize winner Wang Shu's masterpiece, was awarded the China Architecture and Art Prize in 2003, the excellence of the public building category.

School for Jiangsu and other 15 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions) enrollment, enrollment range, high quality of student sources, currently enrolled in nearly 12,000 students. There are now eight colleges, namely, School of Marxism, School of Urban Culture and Communication, School of Urban Governance and Public Affairs, School of Digital Economy and Management, School of Design and Art, School of Computational Science and Artificial Intelligence, School of Optics and Electronic Information, School of Intelligent Manufacturing and Intelligent Transportation, and the Department of Basic Teaching. Professional settings are closely aligned with the needs of regional industries, and there are currently 44 undergraduate majors covering seven major disciplines, including arts, science, engineering, economics, management, law, and arts. There is one provincial "14th Five-Year Plan" key discipline, one provincial characteristic major, six provincial first-class majors, one provincial industry-teaching integration brand major project cultivation point, and one international talent cultivation brand major project construction project. In addition, the school also focuses on the needs of Suzhou's industrial transformation and development, actively adjusts and optimises the structure and layout of disciplines and majors, and opens three micro-specialties of new energy power generation technology, urban digital construction and operation and maintenance, and health service and management. At present, the school has passed the assessment of master's degree granting project construction units.

The school adheres to the direction of socialist school running, always takes talent cultivation as the central work, takes moral education as the foundation, improves the pattern of collaborative education, and focuses on cultivating high-quality applied talents with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physicality, aesthetics and labour, solid foundation, broad knowledge, strong sense of social responsibility, and rich innovative spirit and practical ability. The school has strengthened the cultivation of top innovative talents, opened Wenzheng College, and set up engineering base classes and liberal arts base classes; actively constructed a community governance mechanism for teachers and students, and successfully listed in the Ministry of Education's "one-stop" comprehensive student community management model construction of independent pilot colleges and universities; and firmly established the "service for development, contribution for support" cooperation model. The university has firmly established the concept of "seeking development through service and seeking support through contribution", and has reached more than 350 cooperation agreements with local governments, enterprises and industry associations, such as Wuzhong District People's Government and Health and Wellness Group.

The school adheres to innovation-driven development and is committed to improving its scientific research service capacity. Since its establishment, the university has added several high-level scientific research platforms, such as Wenzheng Think Tank, Life Science Research Institute, Suzhou Development Research Institute, Contemporary Suzhou Research Institute, Brand Research Institute, Contemporary Writers Creation and Research Centre, Advanced Biofunctional Materials Research Institute, Huadian Research Institute, Digital Economy Research Institute, etc., and has been approved to establish the "Suzhou Bio-Photonics Science and Technology Key Laboratory". "Wenzheng Think Tank was selected as one of the best research centres in Suzhou. Wenzheng Think Tank has been selected as a new type of think tank in Suzhou.

Internationalisation and innovation and entrepreneurship education are important features of the university. At present, the university has established friendly cooperative relations with nearly 50 universities in more than 10 countries and regions around the world. The university has set up special scholarships to support teachers and students to develop international vision and promote internationalisation; every year, the university selects and sends teachers and staff abroad for further training and study visits, and strives to improve the internationalisation awareness and scientific research and cooperation ability of its teachers and staff. The university takes the cultivation of innovation and entrepreneurship awareness, ability enhancement and entrepreneurship cultivation as the starting and ending point of innovation and entrepreneurship work and talent cultivation reform, establishes the "Sanchuang College", relies on the Innovation and Creativity Entrepreneurship Park for college students, and endeavours to push forward the in-depth fusion of the first and second classrooms. Various entrepreneurship education courses, such as freshmen entrepreneurship navigation, entrepreneurship simulation and practical training, and elite enhancement class, are included in the training programme, with an average of nearly 300 students participating in the programme annually, and more than 100 projects have been collected in the park so far.

The year 2023 is the opening year of comprehensively implementing the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress, the starting year of implementing the spirit of the first Party Congress of the university, the starting year of opening a new journey for the construction of a first-class, high-level applied university in China, and the key year of advancing the school's transformation and transformation to a deeper and deeper development.
