Founded in 1978, Shougang Institute of Technology was formerly known as the branch of Beijing Iron and Steel Institute, and is a public full-time general undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education, managed by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, and organized by Shougang Group Co., Ltd. In 1994, it was renamed Shougang Institute of Technology with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2016, with the approval of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, the school was listed as "Beijing Institute of Work Safety". In 2019, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security recognized the school as a "national continuing education base for professional and technical personnel".

The school is located on the west side of Jinyuan Bridge on the Fifth Ring Road of Jingxi West, surrounded by Line 1, Line 6, S1 subway line and fast 4 bus lines, with superior geographical location and convenient transportation. The school covers an area of 167,500 square meters and a construction area of 133,200 square meters. The experimental training base has a construction area of 32,400 square meters, 138 training rooms, and more than 5,000 workstations. The library has a construction area of 6,129 square meters, with more than 350,000 paper books and more than 130,000 electronic books. Student apartments, restaurants, 400-meter standard sports fields, various ball sports fields and student activity centers are fully equipped with supporting facilities.

The school has teaching units such as the School of Undergraduate Education, the School of Engineering, the School of Computer and Media Arts, the School of Nursing and Preschool Education, the School of Management, the School of Foundation, the School of Marxism, and the School of Continuing Education. There are 6 undergraduate majors in automation, mechanical design and manufacturing and automation, metallurgical engineering, metal materials engineering, civil engineering, and international economics and trade, as well as 20 higher vocational majors in computer, mechanical and electrical, health care services, safety and environmental protection, and economics and management.

The school explores the integration of "post-course competition certificates" to improve students' skill level and comprehensive literacy. The belief of "skills to become talents and skills to serve the country" is deeply rooted in the hearts of the majority of university students, and "promoting teaching and learning through competition" has become a common practice. Since 2020, the school has won 56 first prizes, 73 second prizes, and 183 third prizes in the Beijing Vocational Skills Competition.
