The School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University is located in the heart of Huangpu, a city of innovation, culture and inclusiveness, surrounded by red walls reflecting the sun and phoenix trees. Its predecessor was the Shanghai Second Medical College, which was formed by the merger of St. John's University Medical College (1896-1952), the University of Schindler Medical College (1911-1952), and the Tongde Medical College (1918-1952) during the adjustment of the national higher education departments in 1952, and was renamed Shanghai Second Medical University in 1985. In 1997, the school passed the "211 Project". In July 2005, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Medical University merged to establish a new Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal Government, and entered the ranks of "985" universities. In November 2010, the College became a member of the first batch of ten key universities jointly built by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education.

The school of Medicine now has two campuses in Huangpu and Minhang. In 2019, the Pudong Campus project was officially approved. In 2020, the Pudong campus of the Medical School of Jiaotong University will start construction. In 2021, the project of Hainan International Medical Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine will be fully launched. After more than 100 years, the Medical School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University has opened the prelude of extending from Puxi to Pudong and integrating from Xintiandi into the international medical park.

The school of Medicine resolutely implements the main strategy of "strengthening the hospital with talents", and earnestly strengthens the construction of high-level talent team, and gathers masters and talents. At present, the college has 42,278 faculty and medical staff, 854 full-time teachers, 4912 on-the-job senior titles, 1007 doctoral supervisors, 1256 master supervisors. There are 19 national famous teachers and national excellent teachers, 1 Ministry of Education curriculum ideological and political teaching team, 8 Ministry of Education curriculum ideological and political teaching famous teachers, and 2 Ministry of Education "overseas famous teachers". In 2011, Academician Wang Zhenyi won the 2010 National Top Science and Technology Award.

The School of Medicine continues to promote the reform of education and teaching, and constantly strengthens the construction of "excellent medical education system" based on the construction of bases and clinical advantages, and the connotation of translational medicine concept. To form a medical education framework of "one mode, two subjects, three levels, four connections and five characteristics" with "quality" professional quality education as the main line, and realize the talent training goals of solid foundation, active learning, enlightenment of wisdom, enhancement of ability and perfection of personality.

The Faculty of Medicine consists of 25 faculties (departments) and 12 affiliated hospitals. It covers 8 first-level doctoral programs in biology, basic medicine, clinical medicine and stomatology, and 4 first-level postdoctoral mobile stations. There are eight years of clinical medicine (doctoral degree awarded), eight years of clinical medicine (doctoral degree awarded in Stomatology) and eight undergraduate programs (clinical medicine, Stomatology, pediatrics, biomedical science, preventive medicine, medical laboratory technology, food hygiene and nutrition, nursing). Among them, clinical medicine, Stomatology, biomedical science, preventive medicine, nursing, pediatrics, and medical laboratory technology are national-level first-class undergraduate programs; Eight years of clinical medicine (French class), eight years of clinical medicine (4+4 master and doctoral class), five years of clinical medicine (pediatrics), and five years of clinical medicine (English class) are the characteristic classes of the college. In 2019, the School of Medicine of Jiaotong University completed the clinical medical professional certification of the Ministry of Education with high quality. As the only school in China, the school of Medicine accepted the whole process of the expert group of the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME), and was highly praised by domestic and foreign experts.

At present, the college has 9,026 students, including 3,213 undergraduates, 5,533 postgraduates and 280 international students. The overall employment rate is 97%.

As the first batch of pilot universities, the College of Medicine has fully implemented the "Undergraduate teaching teacher incentive Plan of Municipal universities", and in accordance with the working principles of "team leadership, chief responsibility, full incentive, and system guarantee", 34 education and teaching teams have been set up in the headquarters of the college, and the quality of medical education has been further improved.

As the chairman unit of the Basic Medical Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, the deputy chairman unit of the Oral Medicine Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, the subject leader unit of the national Clinical Skills Experimental Demonstration Center and the national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, It has the advantages of complete clinical simulation function, strong teaching team, rich medical resources and advanced operating platform, and comprehensively improves the clinical skills and innovation consciousness of medical students through organ system integrated courses, clinical skills operation, and objectified clinical examinations. At present, there are 4 national off-campus practice education bases for college students, 1 national clinical skills experimental teaching and training demonstration center, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 2 national clinical teaching and training demonstration centers, and 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching projects.

Over the years, it has won 11 national teaching achievement awards, 7 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 10 national quality courses, 5 national resource sharing courses, 3 national bilingual teaching demonstration courses, 2 national quality online open courses, 8 national quality open demonstration courses, and 6 national first-class undergraduate courses. "Health Management of Common Chronic Diseases" has become the first large open online course (MOOC) for nursing majors in China.

With a total collection of nearly 1 million volumes (including more than 500,000 electronic books), the library is a key collection unit in China and a national French medical special collection center. There are 86 electronic literature databases covering biomedical fields such as clinical medicine, basic medicine, pharmacy, nursing, public health and evidence-based medicine. In addition, the library also has a wealth of medical teaching and research resources such as Primal Pictures and Access Medicine series.
