Qinghai Normal University is located in Xining, an ancient plateau city with a key in the West Sea and a throat in the sea. It was founded in 1956 and was originally named Qinghai Teachers College. It was upgraded to Qinghai Normal University in 1958 and renamed Qinghai Normal University in 1984. After 1997, Qinghai Institute of Education, Qinghai Teachers College for Nationalities, Qinghai Water Conservancy School and Qinghai Bank School merged one after another to form a new Qinghai Normal University.

After 65 years of pioneering and enterprising, the school has formed a complete education system with undergraduate education, postgraduate education, international student education, adult education and vocational education. Its disciplines and specialties cover 10 categories, such as philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, management and art, etc. It is a comprehensive provincial key university with teacher education, national education and plateau regional characteristics. The school has the qualification of recommending outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for master's degree free of charge. It is the first National Civilized Campus, the Excellent Teacher Training Project Unit of the Ministry of Education, the Model University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform of the Ministry of Education, the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, the National Demonstration Unit for National Unity and Progress, and the national pilot university for training high-level athletes.

Qinghai Normal University has two campuses, west of the city and north of the city, with a total area of nearly 1,500 mu. Among them, the west campus covers nearly 200 mu, with a building area of 130,000 square meters. It is lush, simple and elegant, and has a long learning history. It mainly undertakes the functions of postgraduate education, international student education and continuing education and training. The north campus covers more than 1,300 mu, with a building area of 296,000 square meters, advanced facilities, modern openness and magnificent layout. It was completed and opened in October 2016, and mainly undertakes the undergraduate education and academic exchange functions. The two campuses have their own characteristics, complement each other and develop synergistically. There are 4 doctoral degree authorization points in first-class disciplines, 17 doctoral degree authorization points in two disciplines, 21 master degree authorization points in first-class disciplines, 124 master degree authorization points in two disciplines, 10 professional master degree authorization categories, and 2 post-doctoral research stations in Chinese history and geography. 1 domestic first-class discipline, 3 provincial first-class disciplines and 13 provincial key disciplines were approved.

There are 6 provincial-level humanities and social sciences research centers such as Qinghai National Education Development Research Center, Qinghai Provincial Student Mental Health Education Consultation and Training Center, Qinghai Plateau Cultural Research Institute and 4 national and provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers such as "Physics National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center".
