Ningxia polytechnic is a comprehensive university subordinate to the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, which integrates higher vocational education, adult education, non academic education, continuing education and other school running tasks. It undertakes the important responsibility of improving Ningxia vocational education system, building a skilled society and the historical mission of building a lifelong education system and a learning society in Ningxia. The school was established with the approval of the People's Government of the Autonomous Region in April 2002, and was merged by the former Ningxia Radio and Television University, Ningxia Heavy Industry Staff University, Ningxia Staff College of Science and Technology, and Ningxia Mechanical Technical School. It was officially established in July 2004. After 2005, Ningxia Agricultural School, Ningxia Light Industry School, Ningxia Agricultural Reclamation Workers Secondary Vocational School and Ningxia People's Armed Forces School were incorporated into the school.

The school now has three campuses: the new campus covers an area of 1583 mu, the Jinfeng campus covers an area of 37 mu, the original light textile school covers an area of 30 mu, and a 508 mu comprehensive agricultural training base has been built There are 21 productive training bases on campus, 136 training rooms integrating teaching, production, training, vocational skills identification and technical services, and 170 off campus practice training bases for school enterprise cooperation.
