Ningxia Institute of Science and Technology is a private regular undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education, located by Xinghai Lake in Shizuishan City.

The school was founded in 1985 and has gone through the stages of Shizuishan United Vocational University, Ningxia Shizuishan Workers' University, and Ningxia Shizuishan Vocational and Technical College. In 2005, it was upgraded to a full-time regular undergraduate college. In 2012, it was listed as a co-construction unit by the regional and municipal governments. In 2016, it was designated by the autonomous region as a pilot university for the overall transformation towards application-oriented education. In 2018, it was designated as a pilot school for "Internet + Education" by the autonomous region, and in 2021, it was approved as a master's degree awarding institution.

The university currently has 13 secondary colleges (departments) and 4 professional master's degree authorization points, namely Electronic Information, Accounting, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials and Chemical Engineering. There are 55 undergraduate programs, covering 8 disciplines including science, engineering, economics, management, literature, law, art and education. The mechanical engineering and Internet of Things engineering programs are national first-class undergraduate program construction points. Twelve majors, namely Electrical Engineering and Automation, Computer Science and Technology, Network Engineering, Data Science and Big Data Technology, Applied Chemistry, Automotive Service Engineering, Safety Engineering, Engineering Management, Accounting, Financial Management, E-commerce and English, are designated as first-class undergraduate major construction points at the autonomous region level. The school has 2 advantageous and characteristic disciplines and key disciplines of the autonomous region, 4 key construction specialties of the autonomous region, 6 characteristic specialties of the autonomous region, and 5 demonstration specialties for industry-education integration talent cultivation of the autonomous region. The school recruits students from 24 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country. Currently, there are over 17,000 full-time students on campus.

The school has successively been awarded the titles of National Model Point for Learning from Lei Feng Activities, National Model Unit for Greening, and National Model Unit for Energy Conservation in Public Institutions. Zhao Hui 'e, the chairperson, was awarded the title of National Model Worker. The School of Economics and Management, the School of Literature and Art, and the Student Affairs Department have respectively been awarded the National May Day Women's Model Post and the National Women's Civilization Post. It has become a national model "one-stop" student community in colleges and universities, one of the first batch of pilot schools for first aid education in the region, and has established the first veteran service station in colleges and universities in the region.

The school is vigorously promoting the digitalization of education, building an Internet of Things (iot) middle platform, business middle platform, data middle platform, video middle platform, and AI middle platform to support services for a safe campus, a green campus, a digital campus, and a smart campus. Build the "Ningli Yuzhiyun" smart teaching platform, construct a new picture of smart education through spatial integration, reshape the new form of teaching scenarios with digital intelligence empowerment, support new educational decision-making with multi-intelligence evaluation, and drive new management of the entire teaching process with data, to fully build an intelligent education ecosystem.

To serve the development of the "Six New, Six Special, Six Excellent +N" key industries in Ningxia Autonomous Region and the industrial transformation and upgrading of Shizuishan City, a national old industrial city and resource-based city, the school has seized the development opportunity of the "Four New" construction by the Ministry of Education, focusing on the construction of "New Engineering" and "New Liberal Arts". Actively connect with emerging industries and modern service industries such as electronic information, equipment manufacturing, modern chemical engineering, and smart finance in Ningxia and the western region, strive to build an innovative and cross-integrated talent cultivation model, further promote the integration of industry and education for collaborative talent cultivation, and continuously improve the quality of applied talent cultivation. The school has been approved for one new engineering academician workstation in Ningxia, one autonomous Region Engineering Technology Research Center, one pilot virtual teaching and research room of the Ministry of Education, one Huang Danyan-style teacher team of Autonomous Region universities, ten first-class grassroots teaching organizations of the autonomous region, and four modern industry colleges of the autonomous region.

The school actively promotes international exchanges and cooperation. Since being included in the Ministry of Education's plan for supporting universities in the western region, Northeastern University, Zhejiang University of Technology and Shaanxi Normal University have successively joined hands for targeted support and carried out the Fujian-Ningxia targeted cooperation with Xiamen University of Technology. A series of solid and effective collaborations have been carried out in many fields, including the joint undergraduate training program, the joint postgraduate training program, the special plan for targeted support and training of postgraduates, the domestic visiting scholar program, the on-the-job training program, and the co-construction of the MOOC Westward Journey project. We have made one key breakthrough after another in the construction of scientific research platforms such as academicians' workstations, engineering technology research centers, key laboratories, talent highlands, scientific and technological innovation teams, and key research and development projects. The school has successively carried out undergraduate joint training programs with foreign universities such as the University of California, Riverside in the United States, California Polytechnic State University Pomona in the United States, Seiji International University in Japan, Northumbria University in the United Kingdom, and the Trosingen University of Music in Germany, including "3+1" undergraduate and postgraduate integrated programs, international courses, and overseas study visit programs for outstanding students.
