Ningxia Institute of Industry Technology is located in Yinchuan, the beautiful "Lake City on the Border of Desert". Approved by the Ministry of Education, it was founded in 1981. It is a general higher vocational college dominated by engineering disciplines and qualified to recruit students nationwide. Affiliated with Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group, the college serves as the staff training center of the group and holds the national Grade II qualification for work safety training.

The college has six teaching departments including Mining Engineering Department, Mechatronic Engineering Department, Chemical Engineering Department, Mechatronic Equipment Training Workshop, Fully-mechanized Mining & Tunneling Training Workshop and Continuing Education Department. It offers 17 majors such as Applied Chemical Technology, Chemical Equipment Maintenance Technology, Coal Mining Technology, Mine Electromechanics, Mine Ventilation and Safety, Deep Processing and Utilization of Coal, and Mine Surveying. Among them, Mechatronics Technology, Coal Mining Technology and Deep Processing and Utilization of Coal have been rated as national high-quality majors and autonomous regional backbone demonstration majors. In 2011, Mine Electromechanics and Coal Mining Technology were included in the central finance-supported "Program for Enhancing Majors' Capacity to Serve Industrial Development".

The college covers an area of 110,000 square meters with a construction area of 49,000 square meters. The total value of teaching equipment is 39.02 million yuan. The library collects 135,000 printed books and electronic books of 1.2T. A campus network system featuring "10G core bandwidth, 1G convergence bandwidth and 100M desktop bandwidth" as well as a complete campus security monitoring system has been constructed.

The college has two domestically first-class large-scale training workshops for fully-mechanized mining, tunneling and electromechanical equipment, together with 15 well-equipped professional laboratories. Fourteen productive coal mines, three coal washing plants and machinery maintenance centers under Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group act as the college’s off-campus training bases to satisfy the needs of practical teaching, on-the-job internships and staff training.

There are 126 full-time teachers, including 27 teachers with senior professional titles and 44 teachers with intermediate professional titles; six young teachers hold master’s degrees or above, and another 14 are pursuing master’s degrees. The college has 1,514 full-time students.

The school sponsor, Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group, is the largest state-owned enterprise in the autonomous region. It is a super-large comprehensive energy group mainly engaged in coal mining, coal washing, coal chemical industry, power generation, machinery maintenance and manufacturing. The strong strength of the enterprise provides all-round support and guarantee for the development of the college. Making full use of the advantages of enterprise-run education, the college promotes talent cultivation through various forms such as industry-university cooperation and work-study alternation, realizing seamless connection among teaching, internship and employment and forming prominent advantages in graduate employment. For many years, graduates have been highly recognized by employers for good professionalism, comprehensive quality, strong practical ability and quick post adaptation. The employment rate has consistently ranked among the top vocational colleges in the autonomous region.

The college has been awarded honors including "National Advanced Institution of Adult Higher Education", "National Advanced Unit for Comprehensive Management of Social Security", "Civilized Unit" of Yinchuan, Advanced Unit for Comprehensive Management of Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group, and has won the "Excellent Organization Award of Regional Vocational Education Skills Competition" for three consecutive years.
