Nantong University was founded in 1912 as a private Nantong Medical College and Nantong Textile College founded by Mr. Zhang Jian, a famous industrialist and educator in modern times. The university is a comprehensive university jointly built by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Transport, and a university under the Jiangsu High-level University Construction Summit Plan. The university is ranked 106th in the 2022 China University Evaluation by the China Academy of Management Sciences, 114th in the ESI China University Ranking and 33rd in the 2020 Soft Science China University Ranking for Outstanding Medical Alumni.

For more than a century, the university has adhered to the spirit of the school motto "Pray for the East and the West, strive for excellence", the philosophy of "learning must be expected to be used, and use must be suitable for the earth", the value of "moral beauty, academic purity "Since the resumption of the college entrance examination in 1977, a total of three undergraduate graduates have been elected as academicians of the two academies, ranking 35th in the country.

The university has 20 colleges, one independent college (Xinglin College), one large comprehensive tertiary hospital directly under the university (Nantong University Hospital) and colleges of international education and continuing education. The university has four campuses, covering an area of more than 3,700 mu and a building area of nearly one million square metres. The library is a protected unit of ancient books in Jiangsu Province, with a total collection of 2.96 million paper volumes and 60 electronic databases. There are five academic journals, including the Journal of Nantong University (Social Science Edition), which is a CSSCI source journal and a fine journal of social science in national universities.

Nantong University was founded in 1912.
