Nanjing University of Finance and Economics (NUFE) was founded in 1956 by the Ministry of Grain Nanjing Grain School, which was one of the first grain colleges founded by New China itself. In 1981, Nanjing Institute of Grain Economics was established on the basis of the original Nanjing Grain School. In 1993, the school was renamed Nanjing University of Economics. In 1999, Nanjing Material School was merged into Nanjing University of Economics. In 2000, Nanjing University of Economics, Jiangsu College of Finance and Economics, and Jiangsu College of Economics and Management were merged to form the new Nanjing University of Economics. In 2003, approved by the Ministry of Education, the school was officially renamed Nanjing University of Finance and Economics. In 2011, the People's Government of Jiangsu Province and the State Food Administration signed a contract to jointly build Nanjing University of Finance and Economics. In 2019, the State Bureau of Grain and Material Reserves and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province signed a strategic cooperation agreement to fully support the development of the school.

Nanjing University of Finance and Economics has now become a key construction university in Jiangsu Province with economics, management, law, engineering, science, literature, art and other multi-disciplinary support and coordinated development. After years of reform and development, the school’s popularity has expanded rapidly, the quality of education has been continuously improved, its overall strength has been significantly enhanced, and its social reputation has been improved in an all-round way. The school has 3 campuses in Xianlin, Fujian Road and Qiaotou, covering an area of 1.207 million square meters with a total construction area of 713,600 square meters. There are 18 teaching colleges (departments). At present, there are more than 16,000 ordinary undergraduate students and more than 2,600 doctoral and master students on campus. It has a post-doctoral mobile station for applied economics, a "Modern Food Circulation Industry Development and Policy" program for doctoral talent training for national special needs, 12 first-level disciplines for master's degree authorization, 14 master's degree authorization points, and 49 undergraduate majors.

Co-founded the first business Confucius Institute in the United States with the State University of New York. Cooperated with the University of Waterloo in Canada to organize an undergraduate education program in business administration (environmental business).
