Mianyang City University is a full-time general undergraduate university approved by the Ministry of Education of China. Founded in 2006, it was originally known as City College, Southwest University of Science and Technology. It was granted the right to award bachelor's degrees in 2012 and was renamed Mianyang City University in 2021 with the approval of the Ministry of Education after its independent establishment. Located in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province — China’s only Science and Technology City, the university has two campuses, Anzhou and Youxian, with a planned area of 1,200 mu and a construction area of approximately 630,000 square meters.

Adhering to the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, the university is among the first private undergraduate universities in Sichuan Province to pilot the comprehensive reform of "Three-wide Education", a cultivation unit for model universities in Party building among Sichuan’s colleges and universities, and an A-level university in the provincial "One-stop" Student Community Construction. It has successively been awarded Sichuan Civilized Campus, Advanced Unit in Targeted Poverty Alleviation by Sichuan Colleges and Universities, Advanced Unit in College Student Recruitment in Sichuan Province, and National Excellent Project Management Office of the West China Program. It has been rated as the Most Influential Independent College of the Year by well-known domestic media for many consecutive years.

Guided by the educational philosophy of "People with educational ideals run ideal education and cultivate people with ideals and pursuits", the university takes serving the future development of cities as its mission, promoting urban intelligentization as its responsibility, and innovating urban lifestyles as its goal. Following the laws of higher education and facing social development, it has established the "3331" talent training model: three dimensions (moral literacy, professional knowledge, creative ability), three stages (academic, career, professional development), three-self management (self-management, self-service, conscious value realization), and one training goal (application-oriented talents with AI literacy who are "idealistic, versatile and multi-skilled"). It has also formed the "3331" university governance structure: three tutorial positions (life mentor, academic mentor, practical mentor), three curriculum systems (First Classroom — Independent Academic Community, Second Classroom — Growth and Life Community, Third Classroom — Innovative Practice Community), three platforms (School of Professional Studies, School of Industry, School of Entrepreneurship), and one autonomous management operating system. The university has built five ecosystems, striving to create a multi-dimensional collaborative education system covering all scenarios and promoting students’ full-cycle development from academic study to career development and then to professional success.

The university consists of four schools: the School of Modern Technology, the School of Modern Services, the School of Modern Business, and the School of Modern Urban Construction, with six major professional clusters and 70 undergraduate and vocational programs covering seven disciplines: engineering, management, liberal arts, economics, art, science and education. It has 3 provincial-level first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 4 application-oriented demonstration majors, 2 comprehensive reform majors, 3 key characteristic majors under the Quality Improvement Project, and 1 characteristic (core) major for private universities. It offers 13 provincial-level first-class courses, 8 provincial-level ideological and political courses, 1 provincial-level application-oriented brand course, and 9 provincial-level application-oriented demonstration courses. Securities Investment has been rated as a national first-class course, and the Energy and Power discipline has been selected into the "Double First-Class" Construction Gongga Program of Sichuan Province as a cultivation discipline. The university has 1 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration center, 2 provincial-level ideological and political demonstration teaching teams, 7 industry-education integration and collaborative education projects approved by the Ministry of Education, and 5 achievements in education and teaching connotation construction projects of the Sichuan Private Education Association. In the 2025 Alumni Association University Rankings, the university ranked among the top 50 private universities of science and engineering, was successfully promoted to a "Four-Star" university, listed among "China’s High-level Application-oriented Universities", and entered the top 10 private universities of city type in China.

Adhering to the strategy of "Developing the University through Talents", more than 90% of the full-time teachers hold master’s degrees or above, and over 30% have senior professional titles. The university has also introduced senior retired teachers and dual-qualified industrial teachers, forming a diversified teaching staff structure. In the past two years, teachers have won 92 provincial and above awards in teaching competitions. In the Sichuan University Teachers’ Teaching Innovation Competition, they have won 5 provincial awards in total; in the Sichuan Young Teachers’ Teaching Competition, the university won an award for the first time, claiming 1 provincial third prize; in the 6th National University Mixed Teaching Design Innovation Competition, 6 awards were won, including 1 AI Special Award, 1 national first prize, 1 national second prize, 2 national third prizes and 1 excellence award; and 4 awards were received in the 1st Sichuan Artificial Intelligence Application Ability Competition. Meanwhile, teachers have also won awards in many other competitions, such as the National University Automation Teaching Competition, the 7th National Digital Creative Teaching Skills Competition, and the 3rd National University Smart Business Decision-Making Innovation Competition (Faculty Group), bringing honors to the university.

Actively responding to the needs of educational reform and industrial development, the university focuses on university-local-enterprise cooperation, deeply arranges talent training and practical innovation, and sets the "1+2+3" distinctive graduation standard for graduates. Focusing on artificial intelligence, traditional Chinese medicine health and wellness, future education, future business and other fields, it steadily promotes the construction of industrial-level demonstration bases. In 2019, its achievements in "industry-education integration and university-enterprise cooperation" were displayed and exchanged at the annual meeting of the China Private Education Association. In 2020, the university-enterprise cooperation project "Construction of a Practical Base for Built Environment and Energy Application Engineering Based on BIM Technology" was selected as an excellent case of the "100 University-Enterprise Cooperation Programs" at the China Higher Education Expo (HEEC) and presented on site. In 2024, the university launched the "One Teacher, One Enterprise" project for the construction of off-campus internship and training bases. Up to now, the university has jointly built 91 internship and training bases on and off campus with various enterprises, covering all 35 undergraduate majors. It has deeply linked key fields such as artificial intelligence, financial services, ecological environmental protection, optoelectronic technology and new energy to promote two-way empowerment of industry-university-research cooperation. In 2025, thoroughly studying and implementing the spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the "Trinity" strategy of education, science and technology and talents, the university held the first "Gather Creativity · Empower the Future" College Students Creative Fair. The event attracted more than 300 representatives from all walks of life and 492 university teams, with over 500 works exhibited. More than ten student works were selected by enterprises for intended signing on site, constructing a new paradigm of integrated education among universities, local governments and enterprises.

Committed to building a positive and altruistic campus culture, the university has created more than 100 activities including "Glory Mianyang City University" and "Club Carnival", covering scientific and technological competitions, voluntary services, art galas, sports and other categories. It emphasizes the dominant position of students, fully respects and gives play to students’ autonomy, enabling students to practice self-management, improve comprehensive literacy, and cultivate teamwork and social responsibility. In the 2024–2025 academic year, students won a total of 1,135 awards in various competitions at all levels, including 415 national awards and 720 provincial awards, with 2,689 students winning prizes.

The university is a permanent employment market for college graduates in Sichuan Province under the "Shuhui Elite" program, a council member of the Mianyang Science and Technology City University-Local-Enterprise Collaborative Innovation Alliance, and a member of the Sichuan College Graduates Employment Promotion Association. It has been authorized to establish the Mianyang University Employment Guidance Service Station and takes the lead in building the Industry-Education Integration Consortium in Anzhou District, Mianyang, effectively empowering students’ innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities and high-quality employment. Since its establishment, the university has trained more than 40,000 application-oriented and technical talents for society, and has been rated as an Advanced Unit for Graduate Employment for many consecutive years, with a rising trend in the number, quality and self-employment rate of graduates.
