Founded in 1973, the school has successively belonged to the former Fifth Ministry of Machinery Industry, Machinery Industry Committee, Ministry of Machinery and Electronics Industry, China Ordnance Industry Corporation and Henan Provincial People's Government. It is now managed by the integration of defense and civilian technologies Committee Office of the CPC Henan Provincial Committee, and is the only institution of higher learning in Henan's national defense science and technology industry system. It is an "excellent" college for evaluating the level of personnel training in higher vocational colleges of the Ministry of Education, the first batch of modern apprenticeship pilot colleges of the Ministry of Education, and the first batch of pilot colleges for teaching quality diagnosis and improvement in China. It is also a national backbone vocational college, a national high-quality vocational college, and a construction unit of "high-level vocational schools and specialties with Chinese characteristics".

The school is located in Nanyang, a famous historical and cultural city in China, covering an area of 2137.01 mu. It has four campuses, Kongming Road,Guangwu Road,Wenhua Road and East Campus, with more than 20,000 full-time students. The building area is 687,200 square meters, the total value of fixed assets is 1.1 billion yuan, and the total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is 256 million yuan. There are 513 on-campus training rooms and 457 off-campus practice bases. There are 3 training bases supported by the central government, 2 productive training bases recognized by the Ministry of Education, 2 national collaborative innovation bases, 3 provincial demonstration training bases, and 6 provincial engineering laboratories and engineering technology research centers.

There are 15 teaching units in the school, including School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Automation Engineering, School of Architectural Engineering, School of Electronic Information Engineering, School of Economics and Trade, School of Automotive and Aviation Engineering, School of Culture, Tourism and International Education, School of Surveying and Mapping Environmental Protection Engineering, School of Marxism, Department of Basic Science Teaching, Department of Physical Education, Art Education Center, School of Continuing Education, College of Mental Health Education for College Students and Five-year Management Center. There are 10 professional groups and 65 majors in advanced manufacturing, intelligent control, electronic information, artificial intelligence, construction engineering, high-scoring Beidou, automobile engineering, general aviation, e-commerce, accounting and finance, 2 majors in "Enhancing the Development Ability of Professional Service Industry Project" supported by the central government, 4 undergraduate majors jointly organized with Henan University of Science and Technology, 5 key construction majors in national backbone higher vocational colleges, 5 pilot majors in modern apprenticeship system of the Ministry of Education, and innovative development actions.

There are 1000 full-time teachers in the school, including 673 teachers with master's degree or above, 377 teachers with senior professional titles, and 91% of "double-qualified" teachers. There are 1 national teaching team, 1 national vocational education teaching innovation team, 2 national model party branches, 13 provincial teaching (innovation) teams, 6 special subsidy experts from the State Council, 2 national technical experts, 4 provincial special subsidy experts, 2 experts from the Central Plains Thousand Talents Program, 4 provincial technical experts, 5 provincial vocational education teaching experts, 6 provincial famous teachers in colleges and universities, and 5 provincial teaching pacesetter. There are 7 provincial excellent teachers, 11 provincial science and technology commissioners, 5 provincial and municipal May Day Labor Medal winners, 29 provincial and municipal academic and technical leaders and 5 provincial and municipal top talents.

The school insisted on training high-quality technical and technical personnel by combining morality with technology and combining work with study, implemented the "1+X" certificate system, and carried out the reform of education, teaching and personnel training mode, such as modern apprenticeship system, school-enterprise "double subjects", order-based, tutorial system, skill competition leading and classified training, and won 1 national teaching achievement award and 28 provincial teaching achievement awards. The Ministry of Education has 2 ideological and political demonstration courses (famous teachers and teaching teams), 10 national excellent courses and 16 national planning textbooks, which have won the "Top 50 Internship Management", "Top 50 Teaching Resources" and "Top 50 Integration of Production and Education" in national vocational colleges.

Henan National Defense Science and Technology Industry Higher Vocational Education Group, led by the school, was selected into the first batch of national demonstration vocational education groups. The school has carried out in-depth cooperation with more than 500 military enterprises and institutions in professional construction, personnel training, construction of teaching staff, construction of practical training base and employment of graduates, etc. It has established Nanyang Sub-center of Data and Application of High Resolution Earth Observation System and Nanyang Sub-center of Beidou Navigation System. Projects such as vocational skills training, competition and vocational qualification appraisal for employees in the military industry system, continuing education for professional and technical personnel, quality improvement training for backbone teachers in vocational colleges, and vocational training for rural revitalization farmers, etc.

The school has established cooperation mechanisms with many educational institutions and colleges in countries along the "the belt and road initiative", cooperated with Niagara College of Canada and Vladimir National University of Russia to organize Sino-foreign cooperative educational projects such as mechanical design and manufacturing, architectural decoration technology and photoelectric engineering technology, and cooperated with South African Ministry of Higher Education and Indonesian Higher Education Alliance Kopertip to train international students in architecture, electronics and electromechanical fields.

The school adheres to the characteristics of military education, pays attention to the cultivation of military spirit and craftsman spirit, and cultivates students' loyalty, perseverance, strictness, delicacy and quality concepts. In the past three years, students have won 297 awards at or above the provincial level in the national skills competition, and the employment rate of graduates has always remained above 98%.
