Henan Agricultural University has been in operation for 120 years. The university was founded in 1902 as Henan University Hall, and has gone through the stages of Henan High university, Henan High university, Henan Public Agricultural College, the Fifth National Sun Yat-sen University, Henan University College of Agriculture, etc. In 1952, when the national faculties were adjusted, the university was re-established as Henan Agricultural College, and renamed Henan Agricultural University in December 1984. In November 2012, it became the first provincial agricultural university jointly built by the State Forestry Administration and the provincial government, and in May 2013, the Collaborative Innovation Centre for Grain Crops in Henan Province was selected as one of the first batch of the national "2011 Plan". In September 2021, the university was selected as one of the "double first-class" universities in Henan Province.

The university has 21 colleges and Xuchang campus, with 10 major disciplines: agriculture, engineering, science, economics, management, law, literature, medicine, education and arts. The university has 1 national key discipline, 4 special backbone discipline groups in Henan Province, 19 provincial and ministerial key disciplines; 7 post-doctoral research stations; 10 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degree and 1 professional doctoral degree category; 18 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degree and 17 professional master's degree categories; 85 undergraduate majors. There are 32,462 students enrolled in various disciplines.

There are 2,337 teaching staff in the university. Among them, 928 are professors, associate professors and other senior professional and technical positions, and 1,253 are doctoral degree holders. There is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 113 talents of all kinds at all levels.

The university has established the National "2011 Plan" Henan Grain Crop Collaborative Innovation Centre, the State Key Laboratory of Wheat and Corn Crop Science jointly built by the provincial ministry, the National Wheat Engineering Technology Research Centre, the New Rural Development Research Institute, the National Rural Information Technology Demonstration Province Comprehensive Information Service Platform, the National International Joint Research Centre of Animal Immunology, the CIMMYT-China (Henan) Research Centre, the CIMMYT-China (Henan) Research Centre, and the CIMMYT-China (Henan) Research Centre. 7 international and national research platforms including CIMMYT-China (Henan) Wheat and Maize Joint Research Centre, National Maize Improvement (Zhengzhou) Branch Centre, Key Laboratory of Forest Germplasm Resources Innovation and Growth and Development Regulation in Universities under the Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Animal Biochemistry and Nutrition under the Ministry of Agriculture, Key Laboratory of New Materials and Equipment for Rural Renewable Energy under the Ministry of Agriculture, National Research Base of Tobacco Cultivation Physiology and Biochemistry, etc. There are 97 provincial and ministerial research platforms.

The university has built Zhengzhou Culture Road Campus, Longzi Lake Campus and Xuchang Campus, covering an area of 2,813,500 square meters. The university has an interconnected and all-rounded information network environment with two and three campuses, as well as a digital campus integrated application information sharing platform.
