Founded in 1903 as "Beiyang Craft School" in Tianjin, Hebei Petroleum Vocational and Technical University is one of the earliest higher industrial vocational colleges in our country. The school began to serve the petroleum industry in 1952 and moved to Chengde City, Hebei Province in 1958. In 2021, the Ministry of Education approved Chengde Petroleum College as the main body of the school, merged with Hebei University of Technology City College and transferred to a vocational undergraduate college. The school is a high-level professional group construction college of the national "Double High Plan", a high-level backbone vocational college of advanced manufacturing service in the national machinery industry, and a founding member of the "Belt and Road" Alliance of China Petroleum and Chemical Vocational Education. It was selected in "China Vocational and Technical Education" and "30 schools in 30 years", and was rated as a typical model University of employment and Entrepreneurship in Hebei Province. For two consecutive years, it has ranked fifth in the ranking of comprehensive competitiveness of vocational undergraduate colleges in China. Since 2008, the school has been awarded the title of "National Civilized Unit" for 15 consecutive years. In 2022, the school was awarded the 7th Huang Yanpei Vocational Education Award for Outstanding School.

The school covers an area of 1140 mu, with a building area of more than 370,000 square meters and more than 220 million yuan of teaching and research instruments and equipment. The library has a collection of 1.01 million paper books, 400,000 electronic books and 12 databases of various electronic resources. There are 849 faculty members, including 323 teachers with senior professional titles (68 professors) and 667 teachers with master's degrees or above (103 doctors). The key majors all have "double-teacher" structure teaching teams, and have established 3 national teaching teams, 2 national vocational education teacher teaching innovation teams, 3 national petroleum and chemical engineering excellent teaching teams, 1 provincial Huang Dannian style teacher team, and 4 provincial teacher teaching innovation teams. The university enroles students from 27 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government), and currently has more than 13,100 full-time students and 5000 students with adult degree education. The school is committed to serving the leading industries of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Province and the development of the national petroleum and petrochemical industry. It has established 12 provincial science and technology innovation service platforms such as a national innovation space, Hebei Instrumentation Industry Technology Research Institute, and 15 municipal science and technology innovation platforms such as the extraction of dium from vanadium titanium magnetite. "Government, school and enterprise" jointly set up Chengde Sustainable Development Research Institute and Industrial Innovation Center to support the construction of Chengde National sustainable Development Agenda Innovation Demonstration Zone. Since 2019, 362 scientific research projects at or above the municipal department level have been initiated, including 32 provincial mandatory scientific research projects. In the past five years, the total funding of scientific research to the university is nearly 65 million yuan, and 1,803 papers have been published, including 247 papers in core journals and 253 papers in the three major search papers. Up to now, it has been granted 808 patents, including 142 invention patents, 7 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, philosophy and Social Science Outstanding Achievement Awards and 7 social science and technology awards.

Together with "vocational education goes to sea, teaching with output", serving the development of petroleum and petrochemical industries in countries along the "Belt and Road", the school jointly established "Luban Workshop" in Turkmenistan with China National Petroleum Corporation and Kakayev International University of Oil and Gas, providing international vocational education programs. The Ministry of Education has carried out four China-Eu industry-education integration innovation platform projects, including "China-Switzerland -GF Intelligent Manufacturing Innovation Practice Base" and "China-France - Schneider Electric Green and low-carbon Integration of production and Education".
