About the University

Harbin Medical University, located in Harbin city, Heilongjiang province, is the first batch of institutions to pilot seven-year higher medical education by the Ministry of education. It is a university co-founded by provinces and departments, a high-level university in Heilongjiang Province and a university with advantageous and characteristic disciplines, a national university with "Basic Capacity Building Project in Central and Western Universities", a pilot university with "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, a national university with high-level universities for public postgraduate program implementation, a national university with "characteristic key discipline project" implementation, a national base for basic science research and teaching personnel training, and a national university with innovative and entrepreneurial training program implementation. Master of medicine pilot university for the reform of professional degree postgraduate training mode, Heilongjiang Higher Medical Education Research Base, and Chinese lead unit of Sino-Russian Medical University Alliance.

The university was formerly Harbin Medical College founded by Dr. Lien Teh Wu in September 1926 and Red Army Health School of Chinese Workers and Peasants founded in Ruijin, Jiangxi Province in November 1931. It was formed in April 1949 by the former Harbin Medical University and the former First and Second Branches of China Medical University in Xingshan (now hegang). In May 2000, Jixi Coal Medical College was merged. On October 24th, 2015, Harbin Medical University was officially approved by the Ministry of Education, the National Health and Family Planning Commission and the Heilongjiang Provincial People's Government as a university jointly established by ministries and commissions.As of March 2021, the total campus area of Harbin Medical University is 3,540 mu (including 1,710 mu of Daqing Campus); The school has 18 secondary hospital departments; 5 affiliated hospitals directly under it; There are 29 undergraduate majors (11 in Daqing Campus); There are 5 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 9 first-class doctoral programs, 62 doctoral programs in two disciplines, 11 first-class master programs and 64 master programs in two disciplines. There are 17100 faculty members, 7942 undergraduates (excluding Daqing Campus), 7066 postgraduates and 377 international students.

As of December 2016, the school has established friendly and cooperative relations with more than 100 universities and research institutions in more than 10 countries including the United States, Japan, Canada, Britain, Australia, Russia, Germany and South Korea. Build two academician workstations with local governments and enterprises.

In 2016, the university reached a cooperation agreement with Moscow First National Medical University to jointly train postgraduates majoring in Chinese medicine and public health; Establish biomedical center and tuberculosis research center jointly with St. Petersburg University.

On June 19, 2018, the General Office of the Ministry of Education approved the termination of the cooperation between Harbin Medical University and Victoria University of Australia in the undergraduate education program of nursing and the cooperation between Harbin Medical University and La Trobe University of Australia in the undergraduate education program of public utilities management.

As of December 2016, the university has 3 state-level engineering laboratories and engineering research centers, 1 national key laboratory cultivation base jointly established by the provincial and ministerial departments, 3 key laboratories jointly established by the Ministry of Education, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Health, 6 provincial key laboratories in Heilongjiang Province, 11 key laboratories of ordinary universities in Heilongjiang Province, 1 provincial engineering research center in Heilongjiang Province and 2 provincial engineering technology centers in Heilongjiang Province. There is one national scientific research and innovation team and two scientific and technological innovation teams of the Ministry of Education. National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Center for Endemic Disease Control, National Base for Training Basic Science Research and Teaching Talents, National Center for Clinical Trial of New Drugs, Russian Training Center of Health Planning Commission, Heilongjiang Academy of Medical Sciences, and Sino-Russian Medical Research Center of Harbin Medical University, etc.
