Irbin University of Technology (hereinafter referred to as HIT) was founded in 1920. In 1951, it was identified as one of the two model universities in the country for learning the mode of running foreign higher education. In 1954, it entered the first batch of six universities under national key construction, known as the "cradle of engineers". In 1996, the university was selected as one of the first batch of national "211 Project" key construction universities, and in 1999, it was identified as one of the first batch of national "985 Project" key construction universities. In 2000, it merged with Harbin Jianzhu University to form the new HIT. In 2017, it was selected as the "Double First-class" construction class A universities list. In 2022, 8 disciplines were included in the new round of "double first-class" construction list. The university has 9 first-level national key disciplines and 6 second-level national key disciplines. In 1985, with the approval of the former Ministry of Aerospace Industry, Harbin Institute of Technology Weihai Branch was established. In 2002, it was renamed Harbin Institute of Technology (Weihai) (hereinafter referred to as Harbin Institute of Technology Weihai Campus). In 2010, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Shandong Province and Weihai Municipal People's Government signed an agreement on jointly building the Weihai Campus of HIT. In 2014, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the State Oceanic Administration signed an agreement on jointly building the Institute of Marine Science and Technology at HIT. In 2019, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Shandong Provincial People's Government and Weihai People's Government renewed the agreement on jointly building the Weihai Campus of HIT. In 2020, HIT and Weihai Municipal People's Government signed an agreement on deepening school-local cooperation during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. In the Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan and 2035 Vision for National Economic and Social Development of Shandong Province issued by the People's Government of Shandong Province in 2021, HIT Weihai Campus was included in the support plan for the construction of first-class universities affiliated to the Ministry of higher Education in Shandong. Marine engineering and Marine science are the key disciplines of "985 Project" of HIT.
