Guangzhou University of Commerce was formerly known as Zengcheng College of South China Normal University. It began to admit students in 1999 and is the first new mechanism secondary college in Guangdong Province and one of the first independent colleges in China. In recent years, the school's education has entered a new stage. In 2011, it was granted the right to confer bachelor's degrees. In 2014, it became the first independent college in Guangdong Province to be transformed into a regular undergraduate university. In 2020, it successfully passed the qualified evaluation of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education. In 2021, it was listed as one of the first private universities in Guangdong Province to be approved for master's degree programs. In 2023, it was approved as a dependent unit of the National Natural Science Foundation. It ranked third in the national evaluation of the value-added of scientific research competitiveness of private undergraduate colleges, with an A+ level. It has been awarded the title of "Best Private Undergraduate College for Scientific Research Ecosystem" for two consecutive years.

The university has 13 colleges, including the School of Economics, School of Management, School of Accounting, School of Foreign Languages, School of Law, School of Information Technology and Engineering, School of Modern Information Industry, School of Art and Design, School of International Studies, School of Digital Economy Industry, School of Marxism, School of Physical Education, and School of Continuing Education, which undertake the enrollment tasks within the national plan. Currently, there are over 30,000 full-time students and more than 2,200 faculty members, including two recipients of national-level talent titles.

The campus covers an area of over 1,000 mu, with a total building area of over 500,000 square meters. The university library has a collection of over 3.09 million volumes of paper books, and the total value of teaching and research equipment exceeds 130 million yuan. The campus network and wireless network have covered the entire campus. The university has three provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers and 204 on-campus experimental and training centers (rooms). It actively seeks cooperation with the government and industry enterprises to jointly build the "School of Modern Information Industry", "School of Digital Economy Industry", on-campus social legal service center, community correction volunteer service base, Huangpu District police training base, rule of law tax demonstration base, maker space, Cainiao Post Office, campus E-bank, and online entrepreneurship incubation base, among other collaborative education platforms. At the same time, it has 352 off-campus practical teaching bases, which can meet the needs of practical teaching. Teaching buildings, libraries, multimedia classrooms, etc., provide students with a good learning environment. The campus has 46 sports venues, and teachers' apartments, student apartments, canteens, banks, supermarkets, and a university hospital provide good living guarantees for teachers and students. The campus environment is beautiful, with fresh air, shady trees, and picturesque lakes and mountains, making it an ideal place for study and growth.
