The history of Dalian University can be traced back to Dalian University, which was founded in April 1949 (Dalian University was revoked in July 1950, and Dalian University of Technology Branch was established in October 1978, which later became Dalian University of Technology Branch, November 1983. The Dalian Branch of Dalian Institute of Technology was renamed as Dalian University independently in March 1948, the Kanto Grammar School established in March 1948 (later Dalian Teachers College), Luda City Health School established in October 1950 (later Dalian Municipal Health School) School). In October 1987, Dalian University, Dalian Teachers College, and Dalian Health School merged to form a new Dalian University. Dalian University set up a college of engineering, a normal college, and a medical college. In December 2008, Dalian Railway Health School was merged into Dalian University.

The school has more than 6,040 faculty members (including 2 affiliated hospitals). The school has more than 1,700 faculty members, including 164 senior vocational students, 19 doctoral supervisors, 480 teachers with doctoral degrees, and 1,005 full-time teachers. Dalian University currently has 19 first-level academic master's degree awarding sites, 3 second-level academic master's degree awarding sites, and 6 professional master's degree awarding sites. The school has a total of 7 provincial key (cultivation) disciplines, 8 disciplines were selected as the project of "Improving the Core Competitiveness of Colleges and Universities Characteristic Discipline Construction Project" in Liaoning Province, 2 disciplines were selected as the first-class characteristic disciplines of Liaoning Province, and 1 discipline was selected as the first-class disciplines of Liaoning Province . The school has 29 colleges, 63 undergraduate majors, and 2 tertiary A-level affiliated hospitals. The school currently has more than 16,000 full-time students (including more than 1,400 graduate students).

The school covers an area of 1.246 million square meters, a building area of 581,000 square meters, and a collection of more than 1.8 million books. The school has successively approved 7 national science and technology awards, covering natural science awards, technological invention awards and science and technology progress awards, and has received nearly a hundred provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. Since 2018, the school has won the first prize of National Defense Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of Natural Science of Liaoning Province, the second prize of Technology Invention of the Ministry of Education, the second prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology and 12 other provincial and ministerial awards for high quality. Won 1 second prize and 3 third prizes of the 6th Philosophy and Social Science Achievement Award of Liaoning Province. The 8th Philosophy and Social Science Achievement Award of Liaoning Province has 4 second prizes and 3 third prizes. The school published SCI, SSCI, EI, CSSCI, etc. searched more than 1,800 papers, 674 authorized invention patents, 4 international patent authorizations, 19 intellectual property transfers and conversions completed in 2020, and the contract value is more than 4 million yuan. One national defense scientific research achievement in the field of computer science and technology participated in the National "Twelfth Five-Year" Science and Technology Innovation Achievement Exhibition, and 14 military-civilian integration scientific and technological innovation achievements participated in the "First Military-civilian Integration Achievement Exhibition of Liaoning Province". The school actively responded to the “One Belt One Road” call, undertook to build the “Indian Ocean Island Countries Research Center of the Ministry of Education”, and established Confucius Institutes at the University of Seychelles and the University of Comoros.
