Dalian Ocean University is the only one in the northern region of our country, which has marine and aquaculture disciplines as its characteristics. Agriculture, industry, science, management, literature, law, economics, arts and other disciplines develop harmoniously. Founded in 1952, the school was formerly known as Northeast Fisheries Technical School. It was upgraded to Dalian Fisheries College in 1958 and Dalian Fisheries College in 1978. In 2000, it was transferred to Liaoning Province by the Ministry of Agriculture. In 2010, it was renamed Dalian Ocean University approved by the Ministry of Education.

The school is located in the beautiful coastal city of Dalian. There are three campuses: Huanghai Campus, Bohai Campus and Wafangdian Campus, covering an area of 670,000 square meters, and the sea area for teaching and research is 670,000 square meters, with a total construction area of 410,000 square meters. The university now consists of 15 schools and 1 teaching department. There are more than 1200 faculty members and nearly 18,000 full-time students. There are 12 master degree programs in first-level disciplines, 46 second-level disciplines, 7 professional master degree authorization categories, 22 fields, and 52 undergraduate programs. In 2017, the university was selected as one of the "Provincial First-class University Key Construction Universities".

The discipline system of the school is perfect, and the dominant characteristic disciplines are obvious. The first-level discipline of aquatic products is a "double first-class" discipline in Liaoning Province. The discipline of Plant and Animal Science, an agricultural discipline based on the discipline of aquatic products, has entered the top 1% of ESI global ranking and tied for the fourth place in the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education. It has a state-level multi-disciplinary collaborative innovation platform -- New Rural Development Institute of Dalian Ocean University.

The school continuously strengthens the reform and construction of teaching, and actively promotes the conformal development of education and teaching. There are 1 national talent training mode innovation experimental area, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national college student practice education base construction project, 29 provincial college student practice education base construction projects, experimental teaching demonstration center, virtual simulation experimental teaching center, college student innovation and entrepreneurship education and other practice teaching base construction projects. It has 1 national characteristic base for practical education of agricultural graduate students, 13 demonstration bases for joint training of professional graduate students in Liaoning Province, 1 Center for Innovation and Academic Exchange of Marine and Aquatic Research in Liaoning Province, 6 science and technology small school construction projects approved by the Ministry of Education, and pilot units for comprehensive reform of professional graduate education in Liaoning Province. It has built 1 national excellent course, 4 national first-class undergraduate courses, 47 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 29 provincial excellent courses, excellent resource-sharing courses and other excellent courses, and 8 provincial first textbook construction awards. 2 "New engineering" projects of the Ministry of Education, 3 "new agriculture" projects, and 6 provincial "new engineering", "new agriculture" and "new liberal arts" projects were approved. It has 1 Collaborative innovation Center in Liaoning Province, 2 major science and technology platforms for colleges and universities in Liaoning Province, 12 provincial key laboratories, 4 provincial engineering technology research centers, 2 provincial engineering research centers, 1 provincial science and technology service center, 4 provincial key laboratories for colleges and universities, 1 provincial key base for regional economic development research, and 1 new think tank for colleges and universities in Liaoning Province.

The scientific and technological innovation capacity of the university has been continuously enhanced. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan period, UESTC has undertaken 2,418 research projects at all levels, including 149 at the national level and 677 at the provincial and ministerial levels, including the national key research and development Program and the National Natural Science Foundation. 42 scientific research achievements have been awarded at the municipal level or above, including 20 at the provincial and ministerial level.
