Located in the beautiful coastal city of Dalian, Dalian Minzu University is subordinate to the National Ethnic Affairs Commission. It is one of more than 110 central subordinate colleges and universities in China. It is the only national college located in the northeast and coastal open areas, with a coordinated development of multiple disciplines focusing on engineering. Its construction goal is to build a high-level modern comprehensive university. The school now has two campuses, the Development Zone and Jinshitan, covering an area of more than 1600 mu. The university was set up in 1984 and enrolled students in 1993. It is a university jointly built by the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Provincial Government and Dalian Municipal Government.

Seven courses of the university were approved as national first-class undergraduate courses, two courses were selected as the ideological and political model courses of the Ministry of Education, and 62 courses were approved as provincial first-class undergraduate courses. It was approved to establish two provincial industrial colleges, namely, E-commerce College and Intelligent Manufacturing Modern Industry College. The university has two first level master's degree programs in bioengineering and ethnology, and six master's degree authorization programs in electronic information, international business, materials and chemical engineering, biology and medicine, forestry, and art. It has 12 provincial and ministerial key disciplines, 9 provincial and ministerial key laboratories such as the key laboratory of biotechnology and resource utilization of the Ministry of Education, 2 provincial and ministerial engineering (technology) research centers, 1 provincial and ministerial professional technology innovation center, and 1 provincial and ministerial industrial technology research institute. It has 7 provincial and ministerial key humanities and social science research bases, 2 provincial and ministerial research centers, and 2 provincial and ministerial think tanks. The university has been approved to establish a national innovation alliance for the cultural crown fruit industry, and has won two second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, two second prizes of the National Teaching Achievement Award, one third prize of the National Education Science Research Excellence Achievement Award, one third prize of the Ministry of Education Science Research Excellence Achievement Award, 13 first prizes and 27 second prizes of the Liaoning Province Teaching Achievement Award. In 2006, the school was rated as one of the first batch of demonstration schools for college English teaching reform in China. In 2007, the school was awarded with excellence in the evaluation of teaching work by the Ministry of Education. In 2010, it was approved as a pilot school for national education system reform. The university's undergraduate innovative education, bilingual teaching, internationalization of curriculum teaching and other characteristics have been widely recognized by the society. Since its establishment, the university has cultivated nearly 60000 graduates, and the employment rate has remained above 90% for 22 consecutive years.

There are 58 undergraduate majors, covering eight disciplines of engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, art, and agriculture. The school recruits students from 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government), Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and 56 ethnic students gather on the campus. The school has more than 1200 teaching staff. Among full-time teachers, nearly 65% have doctor's degrees and nearly 95% have master's degrees or above. In 2009, 2014 and 2019, the University was awarded the honorary title of "National Model Collective for National Unity and Progress" by the State Council for three consecutive times. In 2010, the university was awarded by the Ministry of Education as one of the first 50 universities with typical employment experience for graduates in China. In 2015, it was named "National Demonstration University for National Unity and Progress", and in 2020, it was again approved as "National Demonstration Unit for National Unity and Progress".
