Changsha Social Work College is located in Changsha, a famous historical and cultural city. It was founded by the Ministry of Civil Affairs in 1984. In 2000, it was reformed into a university jointly built by the People's Government of Hunan Province and the Ministry of Civil Affairs and directly under the Provincial Department of Education. It is one of the first batch (28) of national model higher vocational colleges, and the national high-quality college higher vocational colleges recognized by the Ministry of Education. In 2019, it was successfully shortlisted for the first round of construction units of high-level vocational schools and specialties with Chinese characteristics ("Double High Plan" for short).

The College enrolls students nationwide, with more than 18000 students at school. The college entrance examination enrollment score has ranked first in higher vocational education in Hunan Province for 14 consecutive years, surpassing the undergraduate level in many provinces, and the employment rate and employment quality have remained at the forefront of similar institutions. It takes the lead in setting up social work, community management, housekeeping, elderly care, funeral and other specialties in the country, covering the whole life cycle of "living, aging, caring and burying". It is the earliest, largest and most professional vocational college in the field of civil affairs and people's livelihood in China. There are 44 majors in total, involving 10 major categories such as public management and service, medicine and health, equipment manufacturing, electronics and information, finance and commerce. There are six professional groups, including two national high-level professional groups of elderly service and management and modern funeral technology and management, and four provincial first-class characteristic professional groups. It has formed a comprehensive college professional structure featuring civil affairs and people's livelihood and supported by modern service industry and intelligent manufacturing industry.

The College has a team of high-quality professional teachers with noble professional ethics, excellent professional skills, high education level and collaborative innovation between schools and enterprises. At present, there are 1055 full-time teachers (340 part-time teachers outside the school are converted by 2:1), 864 with master's degree or above, accounting for 81.9%, and 321 with senior professional and technical posts, accounting for 30.4%. Among full-time professional teachers, 60.9% are "double qualified" teachers. At present, there are one national famous teacher and one national excellent teacher, and one person has been awarded the National Outstanding Contribution Award for Skilled Talents Cultivation. One skilled master studio of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, one teaching and educating model of Hunan Province, three provincial (Furong) famous teachers, two provincial excellent teachers, two Huang Yanpei outstanding teachers of vocational education, one Furong scholar professor, and one person were selected into the provincial 121 innovative talents project. In the past five years, it has won six national awards in the teaching ability competition of the National Vocational College Skills Competition, and the first batch of national vocational education teachers' teaching innovation teams has been set up by the professional team of elderly care services and management.

The College has deepened the reform of "three education" and formed a high-quality talent training level. It took the lead in exploring the credit system reform pilot and the modern apprenticeship pilot, and has cooperated with 36 enterprises to carry out 71 order classes and cultivate 2688 people. It was the first batch to carry out the comprehensive reform pilot of "three all-around education" in Hunan Province, and took the lead in establishing the National Vocational College Students' Professional Literacy Cultivation Alliance and the National Vocational College Curriculum Ideological and Political Research Institute. 18 "1+X" certificate system pilots were carried out. It has established cooperative relations with 42 colleges or institutions in 15 countries or regions, pioneered the education of foreign students with academic qualifications in Hunan higher vocational colleges, and launched a Sino foreign cooperation project in the field of rehabilitation therapy technology between China and Malaysia. Jointly build an industrial college with Alibaba International Business Unit (ICBU). China Funeral Vocational Education Group, China Disabled Persons Rehabilitation Vocational Education Group and Hunan Health Care Vocational Education Group were established. It took the lead in building three national level professional teaching resource databases, namely, community management and service, social work, and visual communication design and production. 141 dual teaching materials were developed by schools and enterprises, and 20 textbooks were selected into the national planning for vocational education during the 13th Five Year Plan, ranking 7th in the country in terms of quantity. In the review of the recent two vocational education teaching achievement awards, it has won one first prize and five second prizes of the National Teaching Achievement Award.
